What are the specs for a good rod for casting artificials. What length is good? I know jetty fisherman prefer shorter rods. How many oz. should it be rated for? Transitioning from freshwater, casting 3 oz. and up seems astronomical! But if thats how its done then I'll give it a try! I have a rod rated 3-8 oz. Its 11 ft. Should I be looking at something for lighter jigs and plugs or work with what I have? What weight plugs and jigs do you throw for different species? Help!! I'm happy fishing bait but really like artificials!

Your rod will tire you out! Get something lighter that will cover the 1-3 ounce range. You rarely need anything more than that on the Atlantic surf in our area (DE/MD) for blues or striped bass.

if you want a decent rod cheap, let me know. Remember that Fin Nor 8' spinning rod I showed you? I got it on ebay for $25 after s/h (20 without). If you want one of the two I got I'll give it to you for what I paid for it or for $40 with a brand new but old model reel on it.
You can come look at it, take it to the lake by me and cast with it, etc.
Its a decent graphite rod and the price is good. PS--this is not an offer to the board--I like the rod--just an offer to the nicest ex-lifeguard I know (not nicest looking--that might be...gulp...Pamela Anderson or some other baywatch lady).:D

I had a hunch I had too much rod!! I didn't even think about it being a matter of tiring me out, just that it was overkill. 1-3 0z. sounds so much nicer at the end of the day.

Husky, I am deffinitely interested! It may be a week before I can actually buy it but give me a call ( I think you have my cell # ) and we can make plans to meet. The people around that pond may give us some funny looks though. We'll tell em there are some monster bluegill in there!

I'd prefer it if you take the reel too cause I have no use for it without the rod.
It is rated for up to 3 ounces. 8' graphite with cork grip. Nice rod.
I'll try to remember to call you. If not call me--I'll PM you my home phone number.

Yeah, those rods are good for the jetty; For the Surf;I like to use my 8 1/2'-10'Salmon rods rated for 1/2-2oz,another rated for 3/8-1oz with Yo-zuris or Rebel plugs, and 1-2oz metals. Those Salmon rods will toss a 1oz Stingsilver at least 100yds or more. For the Choptank or Cape Henlopen Pier I like my 6'6" Ugly Stick Lite rated for 1/8-3/4oz lures, and a 7' maybe Tica style rod rated about 1/2-2oz for bigger Stripers off the same piers.I like Soft Plastics for Piers Sassy Shads,Mr Twister,Bass Assaisins,Wild Eye Shad, etc 2"-4"long depending on what the fish are feeding on.For tossing lures pick a rod that is supper lightweight and feels confertable for a lot of casting won't tire you out.;)

I have a Team Diawa Inshore Special thats 7'6 and its 1 piece. I got a shimano sepheros on it with 12 pound magnaflex. I use that when i wade fish for stripers and trout. I can cast a 4 inch storm shad or a mirror lure really far with that rod.
