Greetings fish wranglers!! Had the great pleasure of fishing aboard the 'Widespread Panic' out of OI on Tuesday. The crew consisted of Capt. Paul, Rich(Fich), Dennis(hookinfinger), Den, and myself. Left out of the marina at around 5am and hustled our way up to the fishing center and out thru the shortcut. The ride out was an easy affair with the 73* water carrying only a slight swell out of the S... We ran to the 940 line and arrived to discover about 10-15 Tuna sticks and a trawler or 2. There was an inviting rip on a very slight temp. break(1.5*), and as we got the spread straight and ran across the feature we started off with a double of 35lbs. YFT's coming from the squid chains we were pulling from the short riggers. A few minutes passed and then we had 2 bites with one coming tight. After a 15 minute battle and one glance at the stern the hook pulled on the 50lbs. class fish. The area was covered with life from cruising sharks, pods of whales, porpoise o' plenty, working birds, slicks, and a possible Whaleshark sighting. The only thing missing were grass lines and bites. After our initial burst of activity we were very disappointed with the lack of pulls for several hours. No Mahi and no Tuna nibbles although around noon we had a Marlin, most likely a White, come and test every bait on the port side of the boat, and even popping the deep bait behind the in-line. Unfortunately, we never had a good look at him and he didn't stick around long. We made several passes in the same area with no more bites. We tried working N and S and changing up the spread and baits, and finally landed another YFT. From the chatter on the radio the bite was hit and miss. Some boats had good fishing while others had a slow pick despite being in the same area. Eventually we began trolling SW and had some Gaffer bites on the long riggers. Put 2 in the box and missed a couple more. Final fish count was 3 YFT's and 2 Mahi....Cruised in at 30kts and with the wind slowly building right on the bow. Thanks to the guys for a fun day despite the finicky fish. 'Til next time....... Fish On
