Hi there,
I thought I'd tap the expertice here on selecting a high quality conventional reel for dual use. Just to preface this, I have a fair amount of experience mooching salmon and chasing halibut but am clueless about shorecasting. Up here we use single action reels for mooching salmon, and so I possess no conventional reels.
I would like a dual use reel for:
-Hailbut, lingcod in up to 350 feet of water (note: line capacity and a lower gear ratio is useful here), and
-shore casting for salmon. Again, this is a new one for me, but seems interesting.
I don't do either enough to justify two reels, and I admit to liking high quality toys--making two reels an expensive option here.
Some things I have been looking at are:
Shiman Calcutta TE-700 and 700: good capacity (25/250), casting drag, level wind, light (19 oz). .
Daiwa Saltiga SA30 (quite similar to TE 700, but no level wind)
Daiwa Grand wave Z40HW (Daiwa Grandwave SL 30SH probably has too high a gear ratio for halibut)
Shiman Trinidad 20 (also possibly problematic because of high gear ratio)
Okuma Titus Gold 15II: good capacity (30/330), two speed so spiffy for halibut. But: no casting drag, no levelwind, heavier (29 oz).
Shiman Calcutta TLD 20II (2 speed, heavy)
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Norman
