I'm going to be adding another computer to the household very soon. I'll be buying it used of course.
Question is:
If I get a computer that has Windows 95 or 98 already installed, would it be "legal" if I took my current XP disk (the backup disk that came with our present computer) and installed it onto another computer within the house/network?
Thanks
than I am guilty. Don't think it matters if you load it on another puter as you purchased the software.
Correct me if I am wrong....

Hey Thrifty,
You can't do it. Windows XP backup disk only has the information needed for a computer tech to use if your computer needs to be cleaned out. Windows XP has to be registered on-line with a special one-time only password, so even if you got hold of an actual installation disk someone purchased, you cannot install on any other computer. So, basically, you're out of luck. But, on the brighter side, you don't really need XP anyway for most programs. We actually had ours removed because it didn't work that well with some of my older programs, like Office 97 (Word, Excel, Access, etc.) :(

I have the 3 disk Quick Restore Disk set tht came with the Compaq. Also a 4th disk...Recovery. XP was on one of em...but as you have explained, it's part of the restore only.
Thanks for the info.
Uh...Cdog
Looks like a zebra suit might be in your future.
OOOps shoulda kept my mouth closed. Just figured since last yr when I got hammered by the blaster worm and wiped my HD and reloaded software that that meant I could have done it on another puter. Good thing I'm not in tech support huh? :D

Most of the time the software you buy is for your private use. Provided that it does not specifically say so you can install it on your private computer(s).

compaq disks are very propritory...they are set up for your configuration only..they are designed to take you back to how your comp came out of the box...if you just "gotta have XP". get an upgrade disk...if you ever have to reinstall xp. you have to have an older "FULL" version. i've got a little comp experience, and will help all i can......P.S. if you want a wireless network, that is a whole other "KETTLE OF FISH" i knew i cuuld get fish in there someware...LOL
