Thought I'd share an e-mail from a fishing buddy from CA. No fish stories from him, if anything he's overly conservative with his fish reports. Sounds like it was a great trip.

Dude:
just got back from a brief 5 days in Alaska. Ostensibly went up to help my sister and her husband work on the design of their house on 7 acres an hour outside of Anchorage. Spent about 24 hours working with them. Then took a float plane with my Dad to a wee little lodge on the Talachulitna River. Spent 4 days fishing; we were the only guests.

3 days spent fishing for salmon: My count as follows:

Silver Salmon: 21 fish (8 -14 pounds, 16 of them on a fly)

Sockeye Salmon: 3 fish (one on a fly, of the other two on Vibrax spinner, one was 34” and fat as a hog, I’d conservatively estimate it’s weight at 16 pounds. I released it after measuring it. Later I researched it and discovered the all-tackle IGFA record is 15 pounds 3 oz, 33” long, and that was on 30 lb test, I was using 10. It fought like a beast, easily the toughest fish of that size I’ve ever hooked. I honestly believe that if I was less ignorant, or if the guide had been closer, I’d have my first all-tackle record).

Chum salmon: 2 fish ( 8 and 12 pounds, both on fly)

Pink salmon: 50+ fish (3 – 8 pounds, all on the fly).

1 day spent on a little stream called Canyon Creek, Dozens of wild Rainbows to 22”, Dolly Varden to 20”, a 40 lb. King Salmon hooked on 4 wt. Fly Rod and 6 lb tippet (the fight didn’t last long).

Mike you would have loved this place. Perfect isolation, extraordinary and rugged scenery, beautiful streams, excellent high-carb high-flavor grub, Grizzly tracks the size of pie plates, and then there’s the fishing. The ONLY problem is that you have to bring your own booze as the Lodge has no liquor license.

We’ve gotta make some money in our respective careers and do this together sometime. I got back last Thursday morning and my casting arm and hand are still sore.

Craig

Craig got me into surf fishing for stripers and we owned a small boat together we fished alot from in Monterey Bay, CA. I hope to get him out here for a fishing trip soon.
