Has anyone heard of Super H Mart (http://www.superhmart.com/about_us/about_us.htm) stores? There is one in Virginia and somewhere in Maryland. I went into the VA location for the first time and thought I was the goldmine of seafood. It had the best variety I've ever seen and awesome prices, but upon close inspection of the meat my opion started to slump.

I seen all lot of bad looking fish, discolration on the sides, freezer burn, glazed over eyes, dried out fillets, not properly iced. This part I found very disapointing. However, they do have some things that were fresh like the blue crabs that were still alive. They had huge raw clams at 3 for .99 cents (I may go back and get some of these). Low cost shrimp that looked fresh.

They sold eals and carp to eat too. They even had a tank with live fish and lobster in it.

They had fish I hadn't seen before. They had Chillean Sea bass for $8.49/lb, but it was dried on the sides and freezer burned. You can tell it wasn't fresh and that's probably why it was so cheap. If you want really fresh Chillean sea bass, you're gonna pay about $22/lb.

It was exciting to be there, but I'm very skeptical about buying some of this fish. If anyone in the NoVA area has been to this store, I'd like to hear your input on it.

hey

so u found out where us koreanfolk find fish eh? most of the areas around richmond/vabeach the asian food stores to me are considered bait shops, as they always have spot, squid, and crabs much cheaper than any baitshop. the super h mart your talkin about(from arlington orig.) is usually pretty good. just like anywhere else, inspect first. i've had good fish there before including tilefish, seabass, etc, etc, i've also seen stuff i wouldnt want to eat, but i see that everyday here in richmond at ukrops and kroger as well.

I will have to keep that place in mind for bait. I did go back and get those clams and they were alive (fresh).

You're right though; caution is necessary while going through their fish selections. I just got to figure out when they get in their shipments so I can get the fresh fish. I like the place though.
