One of the Christmas presents I got was a Rapala "ProGuide Lock'n Weigh" tool. (Combo heavy duty lip grabber and scale.)

Couple of questions:
I've never used one of these things before. From first glance it looks like it could be pretty useful when landing a fish from a boat. It's obviously not useful from a pier, as my PopNet does a good job there. Does anybody use one on the surf or shore?

From reading the maintenance instructions, it looks like you have to keep it oiled up to keep it from rusting. Is that true? Something made for salt water shouldn't rust easy, IMHO.

Just curious if the thing is worth lugging along. It's not light.

thanks...

p.s. Here we call (ferrugem) rust, to the red reaction of iron to "O" or "H2O".
And call (salitre) to the reaction of salt+(O or H2O) to alluminium and other alloys. What to you call to this white stuff? reaction? do you also call it rust?

Iron -> rust
Aluminum -> corrosion.

Got the 60#.
Write up says its made of stainless steel, but the maintenance instructions say to lube it up every trip. :rolleyes:

Hey Bro,
Yeah, now I'm "ready" for that 60lb Norfolk Spot... ;) :D

I'm still thinking it may not be worth hauling the thing. Will give it a try during the spring run, but I think I trust my hands more. :p

Came with a bottle of it's own oil. I agree, bet 3n1 would be fine. Not thrilled about having a greasy tool in my bag.

I can't imagine using it from either the surf or a pier. I've seen boat guys using them. Kayak fishermen love those things. It's a great tool for any toothy critters they catch. Since they have to haul the keepers into the yak, it would be nice to have a darn good grip on em. I probably wouldn't want to use one on cobia, 'cudas or sharks :D

Yeah, I'm thinking now that it'll probably just collect dust on my shelf. I can't think of an instance where it'll be useful on the shore. Too bad.

If any of you boaters or kayakers want one, I'd be willing to part with it... cash or trade. It's the 60# version. PM me if you're interested.

Brand new and it's built like a tank. Lip grabber. (http://www.anglerscenter.com/acc_locknweigh.htm)

Last I'll mention it here. Should be in classified I guess.

I have the smaller Rapala. It's kind of short and squat. Doesn't have the scale but it's light enough to put on the pocket of my "lucky fishing pants" without weighing me down.
