Anyone tried one? Father in law purchased a SaltStriker inshore rod/reel combo, reel looks to be a daiwa re-packaged for Cabelas (forgot which one, but sure looks like a daiwa) and very nice. Rod also looks nice, and is light as a feather, so I had to ask has anybody tried the Cabelas Salt Striker surf rods? They have a 12' 2-8 oz which looks pretty nice (assume that is really 3-6 oz or so in actual real life vs marketing), curious has anybody got a comment on these rods?

took my salt stryker combo to jamaica and had a blast. only fished a little from shore with it, no luck, but took it out on a boat and trolled with it. rod wasnt built for trolling obviously but ran it as a long line with #15 trilene xt using a red and white bagley shallow running plug and caught amberjack, king mackeral, yellowfin tuna and bonita (the kings and tuna made great sushi!). none of the fish were over #20. but the rod held up beautifully, great action and the reel was as smooth as could be. 10 ball bearing and a nice big handle made for great control. the drag knob was large and not overly sensitive which made adjustments easy. would have liked to hook into a 40 plus pounder to see how it would stand up, but no such luck. at $120 for the combo i'm delighted with it and it'll make a great pier rod or long line for trolling the great lakes for salmon and steelhead until i can get back to jamaica.

fmf,
Sorry no info nor have I used SaltStriker gear.
wpt,
On the MI salmon fishin' subject, I've been salmon fishin' a week each summer for last 6-7yrs w/my Dad ~ trolling at the mouth of St. Marys River (out of Detour-Drummond Island)using down riggers. Using mainly Penn 320GTIs on various 9'-9'1/2 Salmon Rods (Shakespheare, Penn, and a Heartland) while dragging spoons, J-plugs, flies, squids, and using other inline jewelry (dodgers/flashers, fish catchers/hoochie mamas, etc) :p
Were looking at using Dipsy Divers more such that I'm looking at setting up two r&r combo's w/line counter reels :D
Cabela's info leads me to think I should go w/longer salmon rods for trolling a Dipsy like the 10'6 Cabelas rod in catalog. Leaning towards setting one combo up w/Cabelas Depthmaster rod-reel and the other a Diawa combo.
Your thoughts? Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

when i was in MI(alpena, oscoda) my f-i-l...took me on one of these deep water trips(90 ft down, 200 ft of water)...got no thrill from from it...28lb coho?...like dead weight...i think a rod with a lighter tip would have been better...i did learn "walleye"...and pearch...never could figure out steelies on 4lb test in the AuSable or Thunder Bay rivers...killed the smallmouth...blew the F-I-Ls mind...to me...salmon are like speed carp...short fight and slime to no end...jmo

rattler,
Whole heartedly disagree with your opinion of MI Salmon fishing
You obviously have not been fishing (or close to catchin') like we have ~ catching 10-20 lb Kings (Chinook) on medium freshwater tackle 15-65' of water = a fishin' blast that is on par or better then most saltwater trolling w/a bit of kingfishing from the end of the piers (rod watchin') mixed in for great anticipation :D
If salmon are "speed carp" then rockfish are just plain ol'rocks  so like ya did ...
Go fish somewhere and for something else,

this was down rigger stuff...i got the biggest fish and it did not impress me...caught some casting a cleo...that was a little better...i still thought the fight was not up to par...i guess it was spawning time...i killed the smallies, and showed my fil a trick or to...big pike fight like crazy...and are great smoked...i used alot of my southern techniques abd they worked well...i have 2 noodle rods(11-12') that i think i will try on schoolies striper and trout...but not with 4lb line...
