Now that the off-season has set in, I returned to eBay for my winter re-stocking spree
I bought a 6'6" SeaStriker BillFisher standup rod with gimbal/cap, diamond wraps and regular guides for $26.45.
My question: Is this rod good for king mackeral fishing from the pier? If it makes a difference, the rod will be paired with a Penn Senator 113, spooled with Kevlar (also from eBay).
Any opinions welcome.
Thanx a bunch
Tight lines,
Evan

It should work as a fighting rod.
I don't know anything about the kevlar line.

Hi evan,
We haven't got Sea Striker rods here.....but they look good (LINK) (http://www.rivermarinesupply.com/xcart/catalog/product_11447_Sea_Striker_Rods.html)
Here we use those short rods with rollers or tip roller for boat fishing. In these situations they are excelent for King Mackerel.
For pier fishing you need a rod that ables you to cast your rig and bait. Therefore I would recommend you a bigger and more flexible rod ex: heavy action surf-c rod for those strong king mackerel.
Have fun

Alforreca,
You will see the ocassional boat rod and reel paired with heaver, when King fishing on the pair.
This set st up is called pin rigging. The heaver is used to cast an anchor line, which consists of a running line and a heavy sinker. The 2nd rod is the fighting rod and is usually a boat rod and reel. The bait is slid down the anchor line from fighting rod with a clip that detaches when a King, shark, cownose ray, cobia or another critter hits the bait
its a good setup for it, minus the lines, using braid on a fighting rod is kinda uncool because it will cut everyone elses lines that is king riggin. just keep that in mind.

Thank you nsearch4drum.
Digger already explained this new "King" fishing technique. Here's a link (http://www.ncoif.com/htdocs/king/king.html) he gave me.
Never seen that here. "King" fishing is more "strange" than french fishing. :D
We catch king mackerel mainly with the heavy buldo system (dont know if you are familiar with this technique?, theres some explanation about it in the thread "hello from sunny portugal). It's not easy (that's the beauty of it) but an heavy action s-c rod is enough to catch 15 kg king mackerel (no need for a big game for those weights).
Usually we dont use live bait for them, here they aren't very peculiar about what they eat, with the buldo technique we can imitate the movements of sick, weack, alive fish and they attack them like crazy.
We usually use fireline or fusion for long cast and steel "line" for terminal.

p.s More eavy King macherel (I would use the heaviest s-c rod I have. A Conger eel rod (4,00 meters long) made of "canelon".

Alforreca, sorry about the delay in welcoming you, but have read your posts, and am impressed. Keep them coming, we may just end up with a Sandflea board, that knows no borders.

The best thing about the king rig is you get to fight the fish with no weight or float on the line.

Thanx for all the adviceeverybody, and as soon as i get my digital camera working i will post some pics of the setup.
Hanguknamja,
I prefer braid, especially Kevlar, for my fighting rod because it won't shred when a big king wraps himself around a pylon. I've never heard of braid slicingother lines, but thanx for the warning.
Tight lines all,

I am sory i think that you would be hard pressed to find anything stranger than the way the french were fishing for carp. I grew upon the Ohio river and saw some large carp and catfish caught but never the way you showed in the pictures. I showed the pictures to my neighbor and he just stared he could not believe it.
yeah braid and mono never ends up very pretty esp when you hear the ole clicker screemin like a yamaha! yeah i used to use braid on my fightin rod, but some guys down on the island told me it was a big no no, and since have gone to mono for my fightin rods/heavers. im usin 40lb test, with about 75yrds of 100lb mono as a shock on my fightin rod, and you can believe me they dont go anywhere with 100lb test.

hehehe....I agree.
But the 2 rods.....it also looks "strange".
One of the things I love about fishing....It can still surprise me.... ;) (techniques, gear, fish species, places, etc., etc., etc.). Just love it, I could probably live 100 lives and still be surprised and in love.
