What kind of oil or lubricant do you use when cleaning your reels? Do you use diff. kinds for bearing and other parts of the reels? Thanks..

For the gears, I use either Penn Muscle Grease or Diawa gear lube (I don't know if it has a special name). For the bearings, I use Red Rocket Fuel.

Always read carefully your reel specs. In some parts you should only use grease and in others oil
(if you use oil in a part that should have grease, this part will have a higher level of abrasion and part "consume"), (If you use grease in a part that should have oil you will probably find out that the reel seems "heavier to work" and the part will be harder to oil if the grease dries there). brrrr there should be a fishing slang dictionary.
This is what I use. Mitchell "Super Marine Lubrificant" "X3 OIL" and "X7 GREASE"

Usually drag washers need grease...
This is done if you are going to fully clean it and lub it, if you are going to repair some other reel part or, if you are going to replace the original drag washers for some new metal / fiber washers.

The key word is "Usually". The drag washers in SOME reels should - NOT - be lubed.
Like my 525mag.

Neil Mackellow, A.K.A. Blackbeard, wrote me an email saying,
"Penn drags should NOT be lubed - Neil"
His response was to a question about oil on the drags of a 525mag.

Excellent post....
Specially interesting:
"HT-100 washers seem to be fairly ideal when you take the above into account Adding a small amount of grease will further reduce the stiction factor. "
"Zebco is/was using phenolic washers vacuum filled with 10-wt motor oil ".

I've tried to find some specs...couldn't.
Check the reel (oe specs) to see if it as 6 washers:
|metal|HT-100|metal|H-100|metal|H-100|
99% of the reels use grease
0,9% uses oil
0,1% nothing
I recommend the use of grease... not that brown / yellowish one that is used in the car repair shop. But a good marine grease.

Al i looked at the Penn site couldn"t find squat not even a email address. Anyhow the 1st washer is a black flexable meterial, 2nd metal washer,3rd black meterilal,4th metal washer,5th black material, 6th metal washer. Some of the black washers where simi stuck to the metal ones
so i think i will try a very little bit of very light oil
when i put it back together.
thanks for your help
