Anyone been throwing lures in the Potomac around Fletchers for perch, shad, or rock? With any success?

Water is to fast, high and muddy right now but as soon as it stabalizes you should be able to catch all three. Shad on Darts and crappie jigs. Rock on cut or live herring. Don't know much about the perch but I'm sure some on this board do. :)

As you guys know and Steam mentioned, this area of the river is so delicate when it comes to rain.

I've been down to haines and other spots up the Potomac towards georgetown (not fletchers yet) with little success in the last few weeks, but that was before this warm weather moved in. I think it'll be swarming with shad, herring, and rocks underneath as soon as all the muddy water and floating bodies and treelimbs and crap pass through.

The fishmarket boats at the waterfront are selling herring now so they aren't far.

I may have to stay local this weekend so I may be headed up to the boathouse for a rowboat. Any interested parties gimme a holler.

If you want a sure thing (or the closest to it right now) that's definately where you need to be.

My wings may be clipped a bit this weekend though, that's why I'm thinkin local

I'll let ya know .. trying to find the new phone # for the boat house. If anyone knows it lemme know - thanks.

My buddy and I just got back from Fletchers. Water is still muddy, but I did manage to catch a few American Shads from the shore. There must be a lot of them, I snagged more than I hooked.....

I saw the workers messing with the floating boat dock. They've pulled it close enough so people can walk onto a section of it. They have it floating 30-40 yards off the bank over the winter. I guess they are getting it ready for boat rental for this weekend. Too bad the rain is going to make this weekend difficult.

Thanks for the report, thats great news :) There should be some Hickory Shad up there also. What were you using?. Hopefully we won't get to much rain over the next couple of days--the Shad run should be in full swing :D

we were using 1/8 oz red/white and 1/16 oz yellow/red darts. Saw some people keeping American shads.. Thought they are restricted...

not a bad idea

once I park way up by the bridge is it easy to get down to the waterfront though?

Otter,

Are you trying to lure P&S to Fletcher so you can have Matapeake to yourself? :D

On the VA side, you can follow the trail a few minutes then you have the wholve side on VA to fish. Or you could drive over the bridge to DC side, turn right and go to Fletchers... (No left turn there)

Fair warning,if you park on the VA side you have to walk 5-10 minutes to the water, make sure you don't leave anything worth much visible,my buddy had his car broken into there a while back, and well sometimes the company down there isn't the most promising.Friendly, but be careful with your stuff.

I'll remember that for the weekends, but if they're in there thick then Haine's point right off the wall should be just as good right?

Or is there something about that area farther up that makes it better?

Also,I was going to Fletchers last fall from work (Md) and the road that Fletchers is on is one way from I think 4-7pm going towards the North away from DC.So I don't think you can come across Chain bridge and turn right to go all the way to Fletchers,if that way at all.
I came down I think it was McCarther Blvd. and turned right onto the road Fletchers is on and you can drive on both sides of the road, just watch for the slanted/downhill left into the lot and be prepared to brake,it's just one lane in.
Hope this helps. :D

IMHO....
I don't think Haines point would be as good, there IS something to the rocky, deep, fast moving, decreasing wideness river at Fletchers.

I've had my boat around haines point (and Fletchers)with my finder, and it seems to be quite shallow for the most part at haines, which could be good at times I guess.(not sure)

Plus the scenery and sense of adventure at Fletchers blows the old city-look away anyway.

So does it matter if you're in a boat or fishing from shore when they get thick? Either work, I assume? tuputtz were you fishing those darts double tandem?

Stinger
04-06-2005, 04:49 PM
When they are running, they are quite thick, shore will be fine during the right time of season which is evidentally just starting to kick in.
A boat would be better, but not really neccessary when the run is on.
Also the river isn't that wide there up towards chain bridge, you can cast to the other side with good set-up,not that you will want to.(prob not with shad darts)
On the other hand (often) the shoreline is a bit muddy/messy,on the hike to fish.Don't wear any of your good shoes.
In a few weeks when the herring arrive the river will be alive with splashes everywhere. :)
Happy,happy,joy,joy.

I couldn't help myslef, I had to stop by Fletcher's again on my way home. High tide brought bunch of them in all hanging out right by the bridge next to the boat house. I only caught 2 in the lip, but hooked 7 or 8 on the fin/tail. I don't think that they are hungry yet... I did catch a small white perch. Saw someone throwing a cast net. As far as I can tell, he didn't get any herring. But everycast netted some shad.

Otter

saw those guys throwin nets too.

getting from the hill to fletchers at 6pm is an f-ing nightmare. I looked at my map and said "hey look k street runs all the way there". 1hr. and a half later I was there

Anyway yeah I saw a bunch of shad bustin water straight down from the parking lot. I threw a little tandem tied dart rig for a bit with no luck but they're definately there. Water was still murky, we'll see what it looks like after the next few days of rain.

First nice stretch of hot dry days and you can have a field day out there.

Stinger

agreed,a few hot days and no rain it will rolling.

Also,I've noticed coming home from work through DC it seems the cherry-blossom thingy has things all tied up in a bunch of areas. :(
