there's a thread on the virginia board by Jake Ace which has a good deal of talk about cleaning up the beaches/piers when fishing.

this struck a chord with me as i was out on my boat this weekend catching a few and lost a bunch of jigs to the logs. one time after tying on again i almost tossed the tag into the water after i bit it off. i caught myself and though "am i too lazy to care about this bit of pollution, open your pocket and put it in there dumba$$."

part of the price that i pay to catch fish is to help conserve the fish and their surroundings. i have picked up 40 year old rusty cans off of islands in the middle of a huge lake in canada, so why would i even think about tossing some mono into my local river?

then along comes Jake's post.....so here goes:

i would ask each of you to join me in making a personal committment to clean up each area where you fish this year ( i know many of you already do this). pick up a little or a lot, every bit will help. just commit to bringing home (or properly disposing of) an amount of trash that will make a difference in the expierience of the next guy (or gal, or kid) to come along. teach your friends and children to do the same.

I WILL.

I am going to recycle some of those wal-mart bags by filling one with trash each time out, i just went and put some in my tackle bag.

have a great fishing season all, hope to see you out there this year,

jerry

If more people took the time to clean up the beaches, piers, docks and jetties we fish from, I believe that it would produce better and more fish.

thats one thing that my father taught me while we were fishing. always clean up after yourself. if you wouldnt throw trash in your own house then dont throw it in someone elses (ie the fish)

he was especially concerned with old fishing line. he showed me pictures of birds and dolphins that had become entangled with old line. the lesson really hit home and i have been preaching it ever since. i always bring a trash bag with me when im on a boat or beach and utilize the the trash cans on the piers.

really pisses me off to see someone casually throw trash/line in the water. :--| wish i could go and dump my trash in their living room. :D

amazing that a person who makes hiss living from the sea can be the one polluting it in the worst way. fishing line does not degrade and can kill for years. what an idiot

Yes, it's not just the beaches. I spent a fair amount of time picking up trash - including one huge bird's nest - from the pier yesterday - plenty of trash cans around, but people can't seem to be bothered to walk a few steps. I guess they are the ones catching all the fish (though not from what I observed) so they don't have time to pickup after themselves.

Keep it clean!

heck everytime i go around a place where they will allow us to fish at im always packing trash bags . ive been where jack goes and a few times , it like a dump , now these , ive tried in the past to have a clean up day there and meet some of you guys , clean up , fish , cook out ,and teach a few of you nonfishn people the way it,s done :D but it,s really a shame when trash is left there cuz it,s a great fishn area , but when they put up a no treaspassing sign , people shouldnt have to wonder why they did it :(

i'm mostly a planker...stuff is going to blow into the water...but when i am going out and see plastic bags, hook packs, etc. trapped on the rail by the wind, and people around...i get pi$$ed...its "MY" pier...i pick it up and give the ones around the "look"...the beach can be worse.

I always bring a garbage bag with me and pick up what garbage I make and what ever else is there and I think I have set and example for other because I see more people doing the same. Sometimes you don't have to tell people what to do if they see you doing the right thing they will follow along.
