It's one of them ocean sunfish, or Mola Mola. They are seen sunning on the surface. Looks like this one died and got washed onshore.

with the ears, it looks more like a seal
you know the big ones that died, washed on shore and baked under the sun and got a little bloated.

Axon, besure to let us know if you find out.

Thx,
Jeff

Yeah...Its definitely an ocean sunfish...They're pretty cool when you get to see them upclose and they're very common along our coast here...

We hooked one and released it boatside a few years ago while chunking for tuna...For as big and lazy as they look they are amazingly fast...It cleared the water 3 times while we were fighting it and took some blistering runs...A rough estimate would probably put it around 250 to 300...

I've never understood how those critters propel themselves, they are all body and dorsal/anal fin, but they have no real tail to speak of, they really are a wonder of hydrodynamics. Anyone know anything about how they move?

They probably think the same way about us when they see us swimming.
“How the hell do they swim with those two things they’re flopping around like that?”

I was on a torpedo retriever out of New london Ct. from 1981-1983. A small 110' craft , the navy used for retrieving torpedoes during training for the subs. 16 man crew, no officers.

One day during lunch, we all heard the boats "Gunners Mate" topside, then a bunch of shots from the M-14. The idiot was shooting a Sunfish and hollering SHARK.

That was the last time I had seen one until this thread.

The thing I noticed about that fish was the tiny propulsion system it had, .......barely any fins at all.

From what I have learned, they feed on jellyfish.

I agree with the above. One of them washed up next to the Sandbridge pier in Virginia Beach several years ago--several hundred pounds.

I was so happy, I thought they caught my mother-in-law....then there was a kncok at my door and all of my happy thoughts faded away.

It's a ocean sunfish..
