Hello all!!!!

I'm looking to get a couple set ups for my son and I. Have my surf stuff, but I was looking to get something a little smaller for pier, jetties and boats. Still want to be able to handle a blue or striper or decent size fish, but was thinking a rod somewhere in the range of 6ft or so????

I could sure use some wisdom on this subject...size, brand. Not looking to get the best thing since white rice, but a decent mid range set up.

Thanks!!!!

Well you could come up with about a thousand rod and reel combos for that.
Every one has they’re own. Not to mention your combo has to be up to par for what you are fishing for. That’s the thing, now days finding an all purpose rod and reel can be a hassle. Another thing, are you looking at spinning or conventional? You mentioned boat, is it for trolling, bottom fishing, or sight casting? I’ll leave the brand and model to the experts on this board but when you’re ready to buy go to a tackle shop that you trust and ask for help. So I’m going to tell you what I tell all my beginner buddies. When you figure out what type (spinning or conventional, brand and model) get 3 combos with 3 diffrent action ratings. Example, heavy, med, and light or med, light, and ultra light, you know whatever you feel comfortable with. Then you can throw what the other fisherman is throwing when the bite is on. Not to mention using the small combo to catch bait for you heaver, or toss minnows, bottom fish with the med action. Get my drift? The problem I see here is trying not to break the bank. Then again if you ask anyone I fish with I’m as cheap as they come. Hope I was of some help. If not …………my bust!

TICA TC2 9' Surf Spinning Rod
(EHA 427402S 2Piece Black)

This is the famous TICA 9' 2 piece Spinning Rod that everyone is raving about. This Rod has cork tape grips, fast action graphite blanks and super strong guides and is rated for 10-25# Line and 1/2 to 3 oz lures.

Match it up with a saltwater-proof Mitchell Nautil reel- 6500 Pro (yellow reel - lower reel ratio of only 4.5 to 1).

This setup - when matched up with 30 lb test braided line - is the perfect jetty setup - good casting and waterproof...

Just my .02.

One thing about jetty rods is they need some backbone to handle the fish in tight quarters with rocks near. The Tica probably will do it but I would recomend the Lami Tri-Flex series which offers better hardware and a composite construction for great durability vs grafite construction where a nick can be fatal. Jetties can be a rough enviroment. The Mitchel is a good suggestion if you can find them since they are discontinued. Jetties many times are very wet, I have the Higher speed gear(black vs the Yellow) which has held up for me so far(the yellow ones have a better rep).

Hey I appreciate the info. My son is 13 and he's got the casting thing down. I guess what I am looking for is a smaller, lighter combo that we can cast lures and such and not get tired from holding a huge rod but still manage bringing in some good size fish.

We currently have the 10 ft. combos for surf, but nothing lighter and smaller for jetties and such. That's kinda where we are at...hope that brings in some more detail

What kind of rod do you have? Many of the better rods are very light.

Here is a link to the Triflex rods.

They also have a Jetty & surf stick line.

Cabela's offers a nice spinning combo that includes an Okuma bait runner reel and your choice of a 8', 10', or 12' Salt Striker rod. I've got a couple of those rods and really like them. I'd suggest the 8' rod. Check it out.

Good luck.

8ft. is still a little big for boat fishing... you can still manage though. i like to stick with 7ft. if i'm fishing piers, jetties, etc. where distance or height isn't a huge issue. can't go wrong with the ticas, if your looking for something a little cheaper the ugly stik's with the clear tips aren't bad either.it's a good rod for throwing lures and live bait. tips are a little flimsy to toss more than 3oz on the 7ft. though. for reels, i'd suggest a shimano spheros 8000... or an okuma avenger if you want something cheaper. the avengers are great reels, well built and very smooth.

For the reel,I'd have to go with the Diawa Capricorn. This combo has caught anything from big drum and stripers to false albacore.. Probably one of the best allround and versitile rods you can buy,and packs good bang for your buck as well..
