Why do we fish? I got this idea from another thread across the country. The answers are interesting and I thought it would be cool to start one on this coast.

I guess I’ll start it off.
I fish for a few reasons. First of all above all else is that its therapy for me. It takes my mind off all stress that’s bugging me. 2nd It’s a great way to make wonderful memories with my monstrous children. Memories that I don’t have. And 3rd and final reasons are for the thrill and challenge. This year I’m going to target the big man in the brown suit and if I don’t catch him then the chase will continue next year. Old mister cobia can’t hide for ever and the more time goes that I don’t hookem the wiser and skillful I get. It’s a great trade off.

Firts, it relaxes me, second, I'm outdoors. I don't care if I catch anything, at least I am doing something that I enjoy.

i agree... i fish first and foremost because i just wanna be outside, without any of the crap of society today(i should not carry a damn cell phone with me).

my best memories with my friends are all out on the water and drinkin a cool golden delicious on the water.

fishing is the onliest thing i've found where you can be wholly competetive, completely apathetic, catch nothing and be happy, catch too much and be unhappy about cleaning, etc... its the thing that i think about while at school or at work that i can always look forward to even if water temps are too low, and the wind is gonna blow hard from the ne at 35-45.

its not a sport, its not a answer to why we fish... for some of us folk...

its a lifestyle... da rest is just details

I agree it is just a lifestyle! Tried to tell my second wife that she married a "serious fisherman" but she couldn't handle it and we ended up divorcing. From then on I try to make it a habit to let nothing get in my way of my passion! (well except the ARMY) And that is why I introduced my kids into fishing. Nothing better than that.

Guess I never gave it any thought. I've been fishing since I could walk. Must just be a natural thing for me. Can't imagine not fishing. My grandad taught to fish, my dad fished with me, I taught my two daughters to fish, and now I'm teaching my grandkids to fish. I thought that's how things are susposed to work.

Because I ain't got anything else better to do... fishing is not everything, it's the only thing I do.. and I'm suck at it... :( and why, cuz it calls fishing...

Seriously, I've always thought fishing is a way to relax your mind and soul, where you don't have to worry about anything. But recently, it became an addiction. I have to fish every week, doesn't matter the ocean, lake, river, pond. It's not for therapy anymore.  :D

#1. Am a morning person and fishing is one thing I can do in the morning without waking the wife up. If I was cutting the grass with the mower I would wake her, so drive a hour to the sand and not worry about her or the grass.

#2. If am going to watch the sun rise/set or get a tan, might as well us some of my fishing equipment while am at it.

#3. Love being on the water.

#4. Am missing it already......

Fishermen Blessed
Oh Lord of the Heavens, Grey Mountains and Blue Skies.
It leaves me evermore Thankful as each day passes, that you have given me the wisdom and Faith to except these were Single handedly Devised by Your Graces.
And Lord I’m assured you lovingly created these Places as well for humble fishermen like me.
Oh Loving Lord of all things I’m Indebted to “Thee” for giving me the Sight to behold Life’s reflections cast upon the Ponds, Lakes, Rivers, Oceans and Seas.
Surely a Blessed life one man has lived for you as well gave me the Strength to share in their endless Bounties.
An Undaunted Love you have shown me by allowing my Earthly Birth and the Opportunities to recognize what Beautiful rewards these are Dear Lord.
Oh Loving Lord how can one whom I’ve neglected so often have had such an unbroken commitment to me.
And Undeserving as I am Lord each time I’ve allowed my Faith in you to be tested you’ve continued to offer me your undying forgiveness.
Oh Gracious Lord as I lie here Worn and Unrested, I humbly ask that you Once again Bless me, so that I may carry these Memories of living my life past these Days I’ve grown wary and weak.
Oh Lord as I leave these Wondrous places behind, Please strengthen the Hearts and Faith of others should they Pity me as I lie here held in Your Arms.
And Lord I’ll remain through Your Blessed giving of Eternal Life indebted to Thee and Faithfully Yours for allowing a Humble fisherman like me those Time’s
I’ve stood beside the shores of the Ponds, Lakes, Rivers, Oceans and Seas.

fishing and just being out on the water is therapy for me. whenever i'm feeling down or upset, if i can hear the waves crashing or feel swells under me if in a boat, it just makes all my worries go away. Pullage at the end of the line just makes it that much better

I tried to explain why I fish to a coworker... the best I could come up with is:

no two days on the water are ever the same so...

going out fishing is almost like waking up on christmas morning...

I think a big reason why I love to fish is because most people just don't get it... I love the fact that most people will never understand why I do what I do...

the challenge fishing presents..

To be there right time, place, and (of course this really doesn't happen,we'd like to think so though  )>>> outsmart the fish.. :D

I love to go to a spot that I have a hunch, have scouted it before, just know they're going to bite, and catch one biggun. Just being there and not catching anything but taking in the scenery and enjoying being in thier element,is satisfaction enough. Actually figuring out the whys, whens, and wheres is truely rewarding though..

are with my father, he was a flawed man but the memory is perfect. He was fly fishing for bass and I with a worm on a resevoir in SC.

Later my earliest memories involve fishing in Albamarle Sound in a rowboat with my Uncle and laughing out loud as we tried to unhook another skate in that little boat.

Fishing the pier's in NC when I was 8yrs old, there was big surf, light rain and one spot all nite......

Fishing to me is the link to all the happy times, it's an escape from the harsh realities and drudgery of adulthood. Moments that last forever in my memory.

There was a morning at the point...me and two friends...no one else the sun was coming up, it was early Drum season. the wind out of the NNE was gusting to 35 at times, the current was honking due south, the sun lit up the sky as it rose in shades of peach and pink, grey and blue...........

I like catching fish! I also like almost catching fish. And I like not catching fish if it was a good day to be outdoors or if it was blowing a gale or if I learned something for next time or if I was fishing with a friend.

I fish because it is something I like to do weather I catch fish or not, it relaxes me, I enjoy being with the people I fish with, I make more friends this way and it is a way to meet people who enjoy the same sport that I like to do.

fishing isn't a sport
but they are very wrong
not only can it be physically demanding but ya have to be mechaniccally inclined and have a good common sense or your life could be come in danger right quick
if ya ask me i think it is the hardest sport out there

i fish because i am

I fish to get away from it all - kids, significant others, family, friends and work. I like to be alone, all by myself. No one around but me and Mother Nature. I love the feel of fresh air on my face and the sound of gently breaking waves in my ears.

I guess that's why I fish the Lesner on the weekends and holidays. Or Rudee. And drive out to the LIP during the drum run. Or the Point, for that matter. I just love the solitude.

Whether It's watching a Sunrise over the Atlantic:

or a Sunset over the Chesapeake Bay:

It always seems to sooth my soul even if I'm not catching a thing! 100% pure stress relief to re-charge my batteries!

You got it Dixie, a picture's worth a thousand words, so you said it all, in two thousand words or less. The marvels of the world, the sunrises, the sunsets, the glow of the full moon at the ocean shore, or the total dark of a no mooner, winds or not, Rain, sleet snow, fish or not, as some one in a previous post said, voices in my head, but in this world, pleasant voices, alone, or with good friends, with few words exchanged.

Life, live it, fish it or leave it. Too much good around to be negative, and everyday I get to go to the shore, well, reminds me that my Big Guy upstairs is looking out for me, and no matter how bad the trials and tribulations of life may become, wetting a line is akin to cleansing the soul, and clearing the mind.

Dang, mow I sound like a preacher man, can I hear an AMEN? Life is too short, as many of our former comrads on P&S have showed us, hope they get the big one upstairs, so, do what you like, and like what you do!

Have Jeep will travel :D
