I was offered a deal by a sales clerk behind the counter of a fishing department for $200; it’s a 4500 Shimano Baitrunner and an 11 foot PENN Big Game Spin Fisher 2 piece medium-heavy action that was used only once.

I have a couple Baitrunners myself, but I don’t know anything about this PENN surf rod. According to the clerk who wants to get rid of it, it’s about 5 years old and it’s the good kind made in America. Apparently, the quality has gone down hill since it’s now made in China. He’s got the original box, warranty, receipts and what ever else goes with them.

The reel comes with 2 spools at $25 a spool. The rod is, according to him, $140. The Baitrunner, I know, is about $100. He threw a $310 price for $200. I don’t really think $200 is much of a deal since I can get a good set-up like this retail. Now, $100 is a much better offer and if he quoted me that, I wouldn’t even be posting my question to this board because I would have bought it on the spot.

I get the impression he threw a $200 price tag at me because he asked me what’s the most I’d spend on a rod/reel set-up before even making the offer. My question to anyone who can answer: Is the PENN rod a really good rod to have?

Pauky, I just looked on Digital Dagger and th Shimano new is going for $98 with a spare spool at $22. The Penn Big Game II is $76. That comes out to $196 but his stuff is used so I would say NO I wouldn't do it unless he dropped the price. Sorry I never tried the Penn so can't comment on whether its good or not.

I prolly won't get it because just as you guys said--his deal is pricey.

Cdog, sorry you had to look up on the Net for me, I coulda done that. I'm looking for professional opions-like you guys--on that Rod.

I think $100 is a deal for this set up.

Yeah...I'm not getting it and window shopping is what I was doing. I was actually there buying a new tackle box and some flounder rigs when we started talking. I don't know what it is, but I'm always ready to consider more fishing gear. Anything fishing! But from the looks of things, I'm not the only one. :D
