I'm still looking for a spinning rig for my Fall trip to Block Island and Montauk. I want a plugging setup to toss around 1/2oz to 3oz. Maybe a 9' rod??
I'm looking for a reel that will be a good match that size rod and hold about 250 yards of 30lbs. braid.
Can anyone give me their opinion of the Diawa Capricorn-A 3500?
I have this fear of hooking into a 40lbs. striper up there and not having a reel with the guts to land her.

Jeff, the capricorn will do the job. I got one and love it. I have 10# test on it, so landing a big fish would take awhile, but with braid you should be okay.

Thanks for the input, guys. I still have three months to decide what to buy. I'm gonna check em out at BPS soon.
I found a good review/comparison of the Capricorn at:

Al, I plan on using Spiderwire Stealth.

NJ,
I just picked up a BocaPTS40 at Dicks for $74.98 you can try out. Gave it a test run the other day on some schoolies and it worked great.
Great bargain for this reel!!

:D BUT,I own 3 Capricorns.. They are my sightcasting reel, smooth drag, even load of the line makes it great for braid, and it's got durability..

Diawa arguably makes some of the best spinning reels for the $ ! I reelly like my Laguna and Regal. Even my low budget Eliminator held up to a 20lb ray today :p
Sounds the Cap will well work for ya too ;)

Hooked on a 43 drum yesterday one of thoese Caps, not a problem. So I vote yes for capricorn, the Stradic is also a nice reel.

I love the Capricorns, smooth all the way around, good gears and just the right amount of bearings. Granted, a little pricey, but with Daiwa, you get what you pay for.
One thing about your described setup, I think 30 lb braid is a bit heavy if you are planning on throwing between 1/2 to 3 oz. !0 or 14 lb braid would be a better choice and will help your distance with the lighter weights. JMHO.

Alright Jeff !!! gonna do some light tackle fishing.
You are gonna love it. The Diawa is a good choice and you get what you pay for but I'm gonna lean twards the Stradic. Hey but its up to you. Either way your getting a good reel.
the diawa was given reviews better than the stradic.... that being said jeff..... i own a stradic... HA!
wait for kenny to chime in here in a couple of weeks. he's got a new stradic, and a buncha capricorns, we'll see who gets the vote

I concur I own three lagunas they have a few more ball bearings and cost less also.
When I worked at one of the local shops that sold Diawas we sold plenty of lagunas.
Jeff I also got to play with them and found that the Laguna was alot smoother than the Capercorn.
Most of those reel all come in the same sizes 3500 4000 the only difference is in the spool which hold more or less line depending on which reel you buy.
Good luck in your jurny.
