A little background, first....

The Jacksonville Beach Pier only allows three rods...and a King Rig counts as two, leaving ONE for all other purposes, such as back-up, catching bait, snatching pogies, slinging lures, whatever.

I'm gonna use a 6'6" 15-30# with my 525MAG.... Seems like a lotta rod to catch whiting and snatch pogies, but it'd be a hoot to tie into a nice fish on a lure

Seems like a good idea to me, since I can only have ONE extra rod. This one could be pressed into just about any service........

I'll let y'all know how it goes....

If you are wanting to catch a big fish on that rig,IMHO,ya need to make the line choice 14 or at the most 17,that way if you do happen on a biggun you got enough line to do the job.. You hook up with say,a nice jack cravelle with that 30 on a 525 it's gonna be zzzzzziiiiiinnnnnnggg POW!!! :p

Oops...the ROD is a 15-30# class....the reel is a little over-full of 20# Trilene BG..(I've got a 7800yd spool of the stuff)

The 525 worked well on the 6'6" 15-30# UgStick intercoastal rod...

I used it today to catch about 30 whiting (man, they were biting), throw a pogie snatch, toss a Hopkins, and fish a piece of cut-bait and a 5 oz. No-Roll....

The reel was an excellent choice for all purposes mentioned...and the rod was a good compromise for such varied use....

Not bad if the regs dictate only one spare rod.....

i've got a 5'6 penn boat rod (med-light) that i like to use on the headboats with my 525mag. great for 'flipping' lures and vertical jigging... still think it's a little heavy for bait fishing but stripers and flatties are a blast on it.
