Anyone using this reel for surf fishing?
What's it best suited for, far as:
- rod to match it with
- species to target
- line weight
I have one I was thinking about using mostly with a 9' Solaris and some 12lb, maybe for blues, etc.

I have one and it makes a great light surf reel. It should easily handle fish 15 or so lbs. and under. I have mine spooled with 35 lb. braid and on a team daiwa 9' spinner.

with an extra 4000 spool and a 3500 spool.
30lb PP on the 3500 spool
12lb BG Solar on a 4000
14lb Silver Thread on a 4000
I've caught Spadefish, catfish, Puppy Drum, Stripers, spot, croaker, Mullet, Bluefish and Spanish on it. Hooked a Cobia with it.
I've plugged, thrown metal and bottom fished with it.
I've mounted it on a 7' medium heavy rod, a 10' Medium Heavy, a 10'6" Tica, and a 9' Tica.
It's a pretty versatle reel and I wouldn't get rid of it for nothing :)

You have to watch the bail to keep out ANY sand.It dosnt have a very strong spring like the shimano.

tres @ http://www.hatterasoutfitters.com/ has been trying to get me to purchase one for years. he believes its a great value and a highly under rated reel. match it to his custom breakaway 1145 and you can't go wrong.

Thus far no problem.. I have three and they all wear like tanks,I put em through tons of abuse and they handle big fish with no problems, trust me.. :)

Nice reel a little over priced, my opinion would be to by the Laguna 4000.

i was planning on getting a stradic, but after doin' a little homework the diawa seems like the better deal. i ordered a 4000 with 20lb. power pro... gonna do 12lb. ande on the spare spool. i think the reel will match up nice with my JB rod. it's gonna be a blast catchin' yellow bellies and stripers on that thing in a couple weeks.

What's a "JB" rod?

it's a custom rod by jesse bukey. 6'0 medium-light rod. got a fast taper, but enough back bone to lay the smack down on flounder, schoolies, blues, etc.
