I picked some up the other day and was going to lube up my Shimano stradic 5000.
(Side note, this is my favorite reel for throwing lures and such and I am scared to death to take it apart but do nto want to be without it for 2-3 weeks while I send it way to be cleaned).
I was reading the back of the package and it says improper lubing can cause your reel to fail earlier than it should. Now I really dont even want to add it. But I know it needs a good cleaning.
I rinse all my reels off with fresh water when I return from EVERY trip on the beach. Is this something I should be doing? Am I hurting the reels? It makes me feel better to rinse them down after every trip.

I usually wet a paper towel and wipe it down instead of rinsing it directly under the sink. I heard that rinsing it under water might do more harm than good because it can push debris further into the nooks and crannies of the reel.

Most of the charter captains I have gone out with and know rinse all their gear down after their salt trips out too. Hose style, I know they don't use the most $ gear but I know a captain that would even hose all his spinning stuff down then spray it all with wd-40. I can see how it might sink sand into a tighter spot though.
About the hot sauce. Worth trying to add to the reel? Other grease better? Dont take chances have it done by a pro?

I found these sites online, hopefully they will help you out.
Basic Baitcaster Reel Service (http://www.coastalfishing.org/articles/shimanoservice.htm)
Tackle Cleaning Tips (http://saltfishing.about.com/library/weekly/aa010204c.htm)
Smart Reel Maintenance (http://sites.state.pa.us/PA_Exec/Fish_Boat/anglerboater/nd02paab/reelsan.pdf)
I have not heard anything bad about Hot Sauce, but you might want to pick up some gear grease as well. I don't really have a brand I could recommend as I purchased a box online that included some generic gear oil and grease. But maybe some of the other members can help you out with that.
Also I would be careful when you're taking the reel apart. If you get confused over how the reel was put together, the shimano (http://fish.shimano.com/publish/content/fish/sac/us/en.html;jsessionid=58a830ee-8639-ef4b-8b93-5e397311a13e) website will provide you with schematics of the reel.

Cool nuffin, thanks. I will pick up some regular old reel grease too thants what I need. My shimano has a place to add the grease w/o taking it all apart.

I risne down all my rods and reels hose style and then hand dry with a towle. I also started using cans of compressed air and "dust" out the spools. It works pretty good for me.
