ALWAYS ,before every cast you should at least slide your fingers over your line to check for frays or "smoked up spots" in your shock..
On Rodanthe, mid 80's guy didn't check his and it caught a guy who was ducked down near the corner of the pier.. Hit him close to the temple, and blood flew.. They toated him off on a stretcher.. Nothing will instill the importance of checking your shock like seeing a grown man fall to the deck shuddering like a shot goose.. ;)
Can't imagine what an 8oz would do if it hit you in the eye.. :--|

Get whacked with a 5oz sputnik one time. Caught him right in the thigh. He got carted away by rescue. That's why I don't use them. If i'm on a pier or jetty and I get ready to cast I say somethin before I cast. That way if ya get whacked it's on you and not me.

Fished last week at SB, a few times I saw people crawed in the the corner on the end of the pier while another cast (dangerous), and other time I saw someone just cast over the top of the head of another fisherman while he was reeling in his rig. Accidence happens but can be avoided... what's with just wait a minute for someone to clear out for you to cast... crowded piers + fish running + gotch plug flying = this (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y31/ntkg/100_0576.jpg)

Guys,
It was me who first posted that link on the Florida Surf fishing site. Everything you guys are saying is right on the nail, but I dont think you have been reading how that happened to the unlucky angler.
He was snagged up and trying to let the rod pull the lead out, it flew back into his face. Just shows how much power the rod tip has to release in the blink of an eye (no pun intended) this would have happened shockleader or no shockleader
:)
