Just curious if anyone has signed up for the new fiber Internet the phone company is pushing. If so, how do you like it? Any comments, good or bad?

Verizon, my local phone company is bombarding me with ads for their high speed fiber, FiOS. I have DSL now and connect at around 1.2-1.5Mbit. Their low-end fiber deal is 5Mbit for the same price I'm paying now, $29.99/mo, but the price is only good for a year, then it goes up to $39.99. 15Mbit is $10 more.

They will convert the normal phone service to fiber and run fiber to my computer for nuthin. New router is included.

Sounds interesting, but I don't want to be the guinea pig.

I know that once they get the fiber in the house, it won't be too long before they start hitting me up for cable and who knows what else.

Thoughts?

thx...

Answered one of my questions. They don't run fiber to your computer, but a normal 100BaseT run.

Most phone companies laid fiber lines years ago.

In some of the rural areas they are just now doing it.

Somewhere though, that fiber meets copper and though it can be a great improvement in speed if you have been using DSL over all copper or dialup, it would seem just "normal" to cable internet service users.

If you have had a slow connection, go for it, but if not you won't see a drastic improvement overall.

Thanks Bob.

Yeah, I've done some more research on it. For what I use the net for, I don't think the upgrade from 1.5Mbit to 5Mbit is worth it right now to me. Also, backtracking is difficult if I don't like the new way, cuz all the old is yanked out.

Going to ignore the ads for now.

All depends on what your doing.

If you just going to do some browsing then 1.5mb is more than enough. I tested some peoples connection and thier maximum throughput would be 400kbps and they would be more than happy.

I myself have mass downloads, online gaming, picture sharing, streaming video/music and video swapping going on. At 5mbps, I might consider upgrading to 15mbps for a smoother Media center in the house.

Everything will soon be run through the cellular companies. Verizon has already started with broadband speeds in cellular technology. Next, you'll have a cellular connection to your TV just to watch television.

I have gotten a lot of things in the past, mainly for its gee wiz factor, and I think if I jumped to 5 or 15M right now, it would end up being just that: cool to have, but not what I need.

I do see the day in the future when it'll be useful, like for streaming rent-a-movies and such, but for now, I'm going to put the extra $10 towards Storms and Bass Assassins. ;) :D
