Is it just me, or does anyone else find it harder to snell circle hooks?
I was able to snell four packs of Gami J hooks (a total of 20 hooks) quicker than snelling two packs of Owner SSW circles (a total of six hooks).
Or maybe I just snell better when I'm drinking beer instead of coffee????

Now that I'm bitchin', here's another thing. When I snell them circles, I seem to hit the tip of the hook on every wrap.
Even if I go wide on the turn, the leader still hits the point.

I usually use a polamor knot when tying on bait hooks onto heavy leaders for saltwater fishing.....not sure what the advantage is of snelling them (for under 30# I use a double trilene/clinch knot). I can tie the polamor knot real quick. I think a polamor knot is less likely to be abraded by the fish, since the line stays further away from the bottom of the hook (just my thought).
I tie snelled hooks for tying double hook crawler harnesses for walleyes b/c in that situation u need the hooks to be parellel to the line and to make the worm look natural and straight.
for anything thats not a snelled hook, jeff, u know what knot i use.

Yep, circles are a pain in the butt to snell because of the narrow gap. I just do them a little slower to avoid that nick...nick...nick...

You're talking about a hook with a smaller shank. Just pinch right at the eye and put on really tight wraps with a big loop on the back so you don't keep hitting the point of the hook.

Hey Jeff, just about all the rigs I tie are done with circle hooks.....Owner, Gammies, Penn and Mustad. The way I was taught was to bring your tag end through the top of the eye of the hook....
Instead of making your loop as wide as the hook, cut it down by half........
Wrap your tag end around the line and the hook shank abiut 6 wraps and pull tight. Trim your tag end. Thats how I do it.
See pics in photo gallery. I used a 7/0 Penn Circle with 50lb Berkley Big Game for pics.
jeff. your killin me dood... use the bigger one for it, if u have any ?'s call me

Neil, I don't have any problems snellin' no hooks. I'm just wondering if everyone else had a tougher time with the circles.
Really, no problem here. Honest.
I snelled 20 Gami 10/0 J hooks with 100lb. test last night in less than an hour. It took me about the same time to snell six 10/0 Owners with the same leader material tonight.
I really think coffee and football doesn't help ya when tying knots. And I'd be done a lot quicker if I wasn't so anal. If I get any overlaps, I cut and start over. That's what takes me so long.
The beer helps. It seems to slow my hands down, which makes it easier to tie. That's my theory, anyway, and I'm stickin' with it. :p

If they are offset hooks a snell is required... on circles the barb gets me in the thumb sometimes...On straight shanks a snell is not needed...

i teach a surf fishing class here in A-She-Ville every summer and i always had a big box of band aids on hand knot and snell day. a student suggested cutting small pieces of the spray tube from his WD-40 and putting it over the barb, well DUH, problem solved.

The beer helps.
What doesn't beer help.
I learned how to snell a hook using 60lb leader line and 7/0 circles talk about fun. There is a quick snell that may be easier than the regular snell. I have a problem with the polomar and leader material, guess it is not wet enough or something.

I know many in here snell hook the same way using the snell hook knot. Well, here's another way, it's faster than the snelling way, called the snood.
Here are the 2 ways:
hook snood knot. (http://www.bunganutlake.org/hooksnood-knot.htm)
hook snell knot (http://www.bunganutlake.org/hooksnell-knot.htm)
a whole bunch of other knots (http://www.bunganutlake.org/fishing-knots.htm)
