Greeting All,
I am new to the communitty and I hoping to learn a bit or two about surf fishing.

I've been fly fishing in Colorado/Western US for years and I was recently bit by the salt water fishing bug. I currently have a Penn SS 6500 and a 6'6" ugly stick. That is my only salt water set up-

I was invited on a trip to Maui in April and I want to go surf fishing. I have been looking at a couple of rigs...

For reels, I have my eye on two- the Abu Garcia Record and the Penn 525 mag.

For ra od, I am looking at a Diawa Emblem 11'4"
Tica 11' or a Penn Guide Surf 11'6".

I am thinking that I can use my Penn 6500 set up for shorter casting situations, smaller lures etc and one of my proposed set ups for surfing fising with bait.

Any advice out there- Am I on the right track? Any help would be greatly appreciated.:)

You may want to post your question to the following message board:

If you land at Kahului, Maui's International Airport, there is a Sport's Authority nearby. Kahului's sister city, Wailuku, has two tackle shops and is located about 6 miles away. Consider checking the Yahoo yellow pages for tackle shops in the area you will be staying.

I recommend that you bring your two reels and consider buying a "disposable" rod.

Welcome to our little world:p

I swear by my Penn SS series reels. I have them from 4500SS up to the 8500SS. I can cast em pretty good with my cheapie rods (ande tournament & Penn surf series). The Penn rod is a 11 1/2 footer that I sling at the Peake out to the channel. I can get em out past 100 yards regularly. So I would think that the 6500 you have matched with the Penn surf series rod would get you over the hump. II use the standard hi-lo rig with 5oz of lead with no problem. The penn has 30lb power pro, for line, on it.

I wonder what I could do with one of dem "high dollar" rods:D .

its getting hard to fly and just take a rod on the plane with you...if you check it you need an airline approved case...call and ask...best i can do...
