I know that this is sure to start a small war, but I thought I'd share....

After spending good money on "Rocket Fuel", "Hot Sauce", "Penn X-1R Synthetic", "Abu Silicote", ETC....Would you like to know what I've found????

If you'll put a dab of Vaseline in your IAR Bearing and two drops of 3&1 oil in each spool bearing, Levelwind bearing, and worm gear, you'll have a VERY SLICK, VERY FAST, VERY SMOOTH reel, at a cost of about 3 bucks for a several year supply.

No more of that fancy crap for me......

The reels I'm referring to are ABU's (Blue Yonder, CS Rocket, and 5500 C4) No brakes, spools centered, and a smidge of side to side play, and a 525HO/MAG with a similar setting.

Just hope that vaseline doesn't start gumming up on you when it gets hot and cold and hot again. I guess you would be okay if you cleaned it a couple of times during the season and put a fresh application on.

I hear ya man. The crazy thing is that I'll put it on my babys skin for a rash or chapped lips but won't trust it in my reels. WTF!----> answer.....right tool for the right job.

Vasoline, put it on my bedroom door knob to keep the kids out. :D

Boca makes a oil that is slick and molecularlly bonds to the bearings. I really like it in the ABUs. Liquid Grease in the Avet bearings.

I read somewhere to avoid vaseline in reels at all cost. They gave a great reason but my old timers will not let me remember.

tend to agree, bought three bottles of rocket fuel and with half a dozen or so reels, that will last me several years, don't know if it's worth the cost benefit to look for cheaper options. Of course if you have many reels it might be a different story. If you are going through a lot of oil with just a few reels I would tend to think you are overlubing them to some extent.

I agree but I love futzing with toys and oils and magnets and tweaking reels fore hours... its all part of the wonderful fun processes of finally casting and creating the biggest birdsnest ever known to man kind and frothing at the mouth in rage while cursing at the horizon at whoever invented such a chinese torture device such as the conventional reel... then After cutting off 340 yards of good new mono hairball then one through a miracilous transformation as the new fresh line is respooled on the reel "nice new and shiny and everything ":) and then once again the temptress casting machine suduces you to reach for the oil and restart the entire madening process again " yet again"...

Its very relaxing....

Unless you're trying to tame a Pro Gear.

Go with the heavier (liquid grease) formula for those tough to tame reels, if it's still too fast it likely needs magging

I feel you Awesome John.. I got the 525 mag a while ago and I'm still trying to get used to it. I think I will try some rocket fuel and RF bearings once I get the hang of it.

RR-I did use some vaseline and oil on a old spinning bass reel and it made it zing like new. Not sure how it would hold up if your reel started smokin' from a big fish though.

That's why I'm going back to all daiwa. 2 black brakes or 1 red flat end out is all I need.

IMHO with the 525 just keep the mag setting on slow and there is no problems.. want it to go farther hit it harder....Works fine right out the box..With no mods... JMHO.. JAM

If you want more distance just cast farther. I have seen guys cast reels that haven't been oiled in a while for a mile. You should get 100 yards with a Squidder and 30 lb test. Seriously in real world fishing conditions it is not goeing to matter. Just use a good oil and keep your reels clean. The hotter a reel is the bigger a pain in the butt it can be as well. A Blue yonder with no brakes, or any reel for that matter is not something I would try to fish with. There is a big difference in a great fishing reel and a great tournament casting reel. Just listen to what the distance guys are saying...But we all have to learn from our own mistakes...

The thing that messes a lot of folks up with all the different oils and lubes is how they react to heat. They all thin out a bit when it gets real hot outside so what works all winter long on the pratice feild don't in real conditions.. SALTX is a great product for cleaning the reels and keeping them corosion free. They are a bit proud of the stuff but it works. I just stick with the normal penn lube.. Friend of mine uses plumbers grease.. And keep it clean.. JAM

This is good advice from Jam!

The slider in the back position means no problem casting.
The farther foward takes you closer to the edge.
The great thing is that you can begin the cast all the way back and as the weight flies away you can move it forward to add distance.

Yup, most people, my self included, work on the reel and instead of the cast. 90% of the time is the caster not the reel. If a guy w/ a tica and a coroted slosh can out cast you, then it's not the reel. :)
