I plan on making 4 PVC sand spikes rod holders. I would assume I want the top to come about waste high, but how far down in the sand do I need it to go and hold steady? I assume if I have the spikes in the water they need to go down pretty far, but if they are not wet, do they still need to go down as far?
Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Spikes do need to ne in the sand a fair ways to prevent the spike from being pulled over by a good fish. Now the smaller fish it will not have to be as deep, but you never know what is swimming oout there.

I got serveral 5' PVC sand spike and I carry a big rubber mallet with me, don't want to waste my time pushing, stepping on or twisting and wiggling my spikes into the ground like I see so many do.

Call me superstious but i dont use a rubber mallet for the fact ya beating that thing in the sand throws vibrations thew the sand into the water which will scare any fish in the area if ya think about it kinda sounds ight ya know ,, but this is what the old salts have told me also,,, just like lights on a dark night,,, which was provin very so for me ,, as i was slaying the yearlings one night and the guys moved up right beside me that was about 100 yards down since i was catchin and he wasnt but he had lights on and was noisy,, and well whne the moved so did teh fish i didnt catch anymore that night and he still didnt catch any

I used to use the commercially available sandspikes, but they shattered every time I hit them with the mallet.
I now use a plain old PVC pipe cut at an angle. I drilled holes about 18" from the top and inserted an aluminum dowel cut to fit through the center, then epoxied it in place. Works like a charm, cost squat, and can withstand the mallet blows.

Go to a good Dollar Store and you can get 3 nice rubber mallets, with fiberglass handles for a buck.

Those spikes Shooter makes are just awsome. In fact, I haven't seen a better designed spike. They are aluminum, tall enough to get your line over the breakers, and have a quick release. The quick release makes them just about perfect.
The only problem is getting Shooter off his behind to build em.
Shooter, I still want at least one more. Whenever you get around to it. :p

Bring a shovel with u and dig a hole and put ur spike in the hole as far down as it will go by hand. Then with ur shovel scope up some of that really wet sand from the wash and pour it in the hole. In a little whil in will be hard as a rock and its gonna take a lot of work to pull it down.

1/16" thick...1 1/2 alum L stock...get 8' for less than $20...cut it at 3'...add a 2" pvc 2'long...pop rivets to hold it all together...cut the alum to a point...works for me...

I keep the spikes away from the water and always far enough back.

Yup thats poor old fugly me and the sand spike, Teo don't worry about being tall enough and no that aint a jab at being short. They start at 6' but by the time ya work it down into the sand it's just at the right height. What ya don't see in the pic is the foot peg I weld on it to help get them deep into the sand.
Gess between building sand spikes, ladder racks-rod carriers, work and the family no wonder when I walk in the house my own dogs growl at me,,, and someone give that Jeff guy a towel to cry on :p , I am gitting on them as fast as I can :D
