Actually Matt, I belive Foghat is a British band. Now, again how can you name just one?
Got the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker for sure, Charlie Daniels, the Oulaws, Grinderswitch, Elvin Bishop, Wet Willie, early 38 Special, so even though I couldn't choose just one I could choose the two greatest, Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Well, I agree, Allman Brothers Band has to be the best if you think about all the dynamite they had, Duane Allman, Dickie Betts, etc. Then its a tie for second with Marshall Tucker Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
I'm not sure if the Eagles count as Southern Rock, maybe they're country rock, they were great and rank in a more general class of music. Either way, its all goooood.
Allman Bros. and MTB!!!
FB
Oh, and Foghat was definitely a Brit band, they were formed from the old Savoy Brown Band....
Lonesome Dave Peverett, lead singer.

I went to see a killer Southern Rock band down in Benson, NC on Saturday nite. Damn, I can't remember their name. Really great guys though, a fishing buddy of mine knows the whole band and we fished with the keyboard player a few months ago. I got to meet the rest of the band and they're some cool guys. Played some bluegrass, country, a Skynyrd tribute, Clapton, Allman Bros, a lil Margaritaville, Copperhead Road just to name a little. And they played three full sets and came back out for one last song by request. I'll tell ya, I'm one of them damn yankee transplants livin down south and that was my first time going to a real county bar. Now I'm hooked, maybe someday I'll try that line dancing out:cool: .

Actually the west coast scene was more of a folk rock scene, beginning with I would think the Byrds. You had some great ones including the Byrds, the Eagles, the Flying Burrito Brothers, CSN&Y, Graham Parsons and the Grevious Angels, McQuinn, Clark and Hillman, Poco, then some of the more obscure pre famous band ones, Longbranch Pennywhistle and Shilo members from both went on to the Stone Ponies as back up band for Linda Rondstadt, and later became the core members of the Eagles, had the Southern, Hillman Furry Band and thus the folk rock scene emerged into a more country rock thing, and don't get me started with the bands out of Texas!

Actually, did alot of DJing on college radio, hence the diversification of my musical interests. Since it was college had the ability to pretty mcuh play what we wanted, hence, if in a Punk mood, did four hours of the Ramones, the Clash, the Sex Pistols and such, other times four hours of straight out southern jamming, did alot of Texas, love Texas swing especially, like Asleep At the Wheel, but could throw in some ZZ Top, Willie, Waylon, David Allen Coe and Jerry Jeff Walker to name a few, Spring Break time was beach music time, you know the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, Buffet, also included some Springsteen and Southside Johnny, since they were the beach scene in Asbury Park (believe the place I saw them was the Stone Pony, but over half my life ago), then, well maybe after "inhaling" too much did the Dead, some Blue Oyster Cult, Black Sabboth, Iron Maiden, threw in some David Peel and the Lower East Side and some Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and J D Crowe, because that was where the mood took me.
Fishbreath, tell Little Fish HELLO, and got most everything by Green Day (love 'em, took the whole family to Merriweather for my oldest 16th birthday, sat about 20 rows back just off center, but did make me feel old), and probably a few others he may like, with "cleaner" lyrics, can bring some Yellowcard, Fall Out Boy, Early November, Starting Line, some Good Charlotte, Story Of the Year and some other loud but not screamer bands.
Come on Spring!

You fellas don't know nuthin' about Southern Rock.
Sure, the Allmans, Skynyrd, they're good, but the best southern rock band ever is Gov't Mule. Unparalleled musicianship, excellent songs, you know, just feel good music. I would highly suggest that all the Southern Rock fans here give then a listen.
Some of my other favorites are:
Drive-By Truckers
Lucero
Robert Randolph and the Family Band
Los Lonely Boys also offer some good "Texican" style rock.

Blues Brother has good taste, but Robert Randolph is from dirty Jersey(I can call it that 'cause that's where I came from)...Can't really call that southern Rock! Surprised you didn't mention Widespread Panic. I'm a jam band nut, got hooked on the Dead at the tender young age of 14, did Phish tour on and off for a few years. I'm a working stiff now, but manage to get my arse to Bonnarroo every year. I can't wait till June. Robert Randolph made a guest appearance during the Dave Mathews set last year and absolutely killed it!

Los Lonely Boys..............1st band that I can actually listen too that has emerged in the past 15 years. Rythm, instruments, harmony, and soul all into one band.!!!!!!!
Worth the CD purchase!!! I have tickets to thier concert this summer:)
I sense a little of the 60's-70's music culture that thier dad taught them.

Hey Shaggy, you do know some music. When I told LF about the other groups he got real interested. He likes Good Charlotte alot.
As for Los Lonely Boys, I could take 'em or leave 'em, they're pretty vanilla, sorry JL, not my cup of tequila :p . Widespread Panic is excellent as is Robert Randolph and the Family Band. Good stuff. Its all good.
One of my favorites though, is good old John Prine. Always brings me back to earth and makes me smile.

You guys ever listen to John Hiatt or Ry Cooder?
They are not the greatest singers, but incredible song writers.
Hiatts played here(Portsmouth) a couple times.

You're right, John Hiatt and Ry Cooder are great song writers...don't forget the late Stevie Goodman with his famous - Lets Talk Dirty in Hawaiian
Shaggy, if you see me tonight with an illegal smile, it don't cost anything and it lasts a long while.
Won't you please tell the man I didn't kill anyone, I'm just tryin' to have me some fun.

Now, not real familiar with John Hiatt, semi with Ry Cooder. Seems many of the best songwriters may not be the best of "singers", but ya gotta love 'em, the best of the worst singers has to be Mr. Bob Dylan, Niel Young, well maybe can semi sing, Lyle Lovett, mostly talking singin it seems, and Jerry Jeff Walker, sings with a heck of a twang, Steve Goodman, a GREAT writer, A dying Cub Fans Last Request, City Of New Orleans and You Never Even Call Me By My Name.
Now, for me a great writer that could sing would have to be Rodney Crowell.
Now Milt, one of my faves:
Give my stomach to Milwalkee, if they run out of beer, put my socks in a cedar box just get them out of here, Venus di Milo can have my arms, look out I got your nos, sell my heart to the junk man and give my love to Rose
and further along:
Hand me down my walking cane, it's a sin to tell a lie, send my mouth way down south and kiss my ass goodbye.

Me thinks, and yes that could be dangerous and wrong, but the southern boys had the three guitars, usually, the backup, chord player and two dueling lead guitars.
And also to FB, how can you not mention Barry Oakley right alongside Duane and Dickeywhen one mentions the ABB?
