I agreed to go play golf with a client in about 22 days and a few hours and I have no idea how to play, but I get to go to FL! Haven't hit a golf ball in about 8 years and that was just at a driving range. Anyone have a good idea about where I may be able to pick up a cheap (if there is such a thing) set of clubs just to practice at the driving range with? I was thinking maybe Dick's, Wal Mart, Play It Again Sports? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Funny, just got a call while typing this to go play golf with another client. Maybe this is the year I should learn how to play golf...Hey, they got any fish in them ponds?

try play it again sports, you may be able to pick up a good brand of clubs pretty cheap. Or you can try Dicks, they're having the annual golf sale right now and they probably have some good prices on some starter clubs, usually come with a bag and everything. One word of advice, if you decide to buy a brand new set, don't worry about the brand name. Too many people think they're going to get all into golf and play a lot and buy expensive clubs and then wind up using them only a few times per year. I found a nice set of clubs for about $150, brand name Horizon, and a bag for about $20 at a Pro Shop near my house. They're inexpensive clubs but I only play maybe 6-8 times per year so they'll last me a very long time.

Let somebody else take the beating on the price of the clubs. A new set is only new until you use them for a round.....then they are worth about 2/3's of what you paid for them.
Ebay is a great place to pick up a good, used set.

Think three words.....Titleist, Ping, or Mizuno.

There are so many good club manufacturers out there its hard to say this or that is better than another. I have been using customs ever since i started. I have played golf with new Ping i5's and Calloway X18's and found myself going back to custom clubs everytime for about 1/3 of the price. I do like the Pings, and the Calloways and the Clevelands but just prefer my customs. I use an old school Ping IS3 driver and does me wonders. Good luck in your quest and check your pm's.

Golf is a great game but oh can that ball be devious at times!;) Like fishrulemylife said start off with a low cost starter set and buy yourself a sand wedge b/c as a beginner you are going to need it...a lot! If you see yourself playing more often and enjoy it and get competitive with yourself to improve your game like chuck said move up to ping, titleist calloway or some customs. Trust me they make a big difference! Not sure what kind of business you are in or what kind of clients you have but you might want to fork over a few bucks and spend a couple hours with a pro to get you the basics down and work on mechanics. This might impress your clients and get you some more business or golf trips in the near future. :D

look in the trading post they have tons of them. Lots of brand names. Best thing they are all local so no shipping charges. You should be able to talk them down a few dollars as well. Just make them an offer. Works for me. I would also suggest a couple of refresher lessons worth the money . With 22 days and some experience. get the clubs asap and hit the driving range. not saying you will be a pro in 22 days but should be able to hit it straight at least......:D:D:D

Good luck and enjoy the free fla trip.....hope you can get some fishing in.....and I dont mean fishing your ball out of the drink either.

Just remember,,, to pick up some killer pointers watch "Caddy Shack" over and over :D 2nd is don't look like a BARNEY on the course and 3rd is don't beat the guy. Now go out and smack a little white ball with some over priced sticks trying to always put it in a small hole just to take it back out and repete 17 times.
If he is your customer you buy the beer and bring along some killer short cigars,,, even if ya can't play he still might like ya :D

Was actually thinking about taking the "Happy Gillmore" approach. Hmmm, wonder if a hockey stick would be any cheaper?
I appreciate everyone's advice and I think I'll start by heading over to Dick's to see what they have on the less expensive end and then work my way to Play It Again etc... Fortunately I don't think I'll feel singled out as there will be a pretty large group of people playing. Guess I'd better buy a Golf book to read on the plane:D

Also if you know anyone with a Military ID. Get on base and hit the 9 hole free courses.

I do that every now and then. You can gain alot of ALL AROUND experience there.

If you are looking for a great book on the fundamentals that is an easy read and well illustrated, see if you can find a copy of Golf My Way by Jack Nicklaus. A very helpful book, in my opinion.

Ran out to Dick's yesterday and grabbed a starter set w/bag. Not a bad store if you know what you're looking for before you go in there. Actually went to two Dicks (that doesn't sound right) and at the first one the guy that asked if I needed any help listened to the first sentence out of my mouth, showed me a cheap bag of clubs and pretty much vanished in the middle of my next question. All I have to say is that was more help than I got at the second one - didn't even see anyone in the dept. and was there for a good 25 minutes, so I just grabbed a set and headed to the check out line.
Chuck, thanks for the advice on book.
And Malakas, what base is that that has the course on it?

You are much nicier than I. With that service I would have left and never come back. Would have went across the street to sports authority who has a big sale going on now and thay would match Dicks pricing. Glqd you got what you wanted....least i hope it was what you wanted.

The course I go to is @ NOB. I forget what gate it is I think it's 4 but don't quote me on that.

But this place has all you need to get a feel of it. Also make sure you bring your caddy wheels. If you don't you'll have to carry your clubs. I'm in my early 20's and by the time I'm done with all 9 holes I'm one tired mofo! and I run 5 miles every week!

Thanks for the info on the course. I'm sure my cousin's husband could get me in there. Maybe I'll do 1/2 day golf 1/2 fishing one day since the drive would be about 1hr plus.

If you get a week day then that would be a nice time to go.

Since it's a free course you just got to get in line and wait your turn.
