View Full Version : How do I spool this correctly?

I plan on buying an Ambassadeur 7000 C3 this week and I'm debating what line to put on it. I have approx 300 yds of 80# Power Pro which is the equivalent of 18# mono. So I was thinking of using this in combination with maybe some 17-20#mono.

A. Is this overkill? I had the line on my king reel last year and I hate to let it go to waste.

B. If I do use it, should I put some mono backing on first then the PP and then mono on top? Or is there a better way?

It's allways a good idea to put a little mono under your braid backing to keep it from slipping on the spool.I've put as little as 3' to as much as one whole width of the spool.
As far as the reel handling the #80 pp,I'm not sure as I don't have much experience with abus.Sounds overkill but if you set the drag according to the #17-20 mono, you should be allright.

I have a 7000 C3 and I think that is an overkill. The reel cast great with mono.

overkill. could possibly damage your reel like bending the axle. possibly a broken rod on a snag.

you can just use it as backing if you want, normally you would use a smaller diameter for that application though. If you use it make sure you set the drag as though it was 10lb test mono or you will screw up you reel. Either put a layer of tape on the spool or some mono to keep the braid from slipping.

Why did you take it off your king reel?

There's few reasons I took it off my king reel. One, I generally like fishing lighter tackle and when I started kingfishing a few guys on another site said they used it so I decided to try it out. Two, I changed my reel from a Penn 340 GTI to a TLD 20, I actually exchanged the reels with a local Dicks and wanted to save the line.
Three, I don't want any problems with cutting off anchor lines if I get a fish on.

reeldoc, I agree with it possibly damaging the reel or rod in the event of a snag.

I think I'll just spool up with 15-20# mono.

Is there any other use for braid this heavy?

80# Power Pro is good for trolling if you do any. I would be affraid of spooling with it as long a you are using a lighter leader. I normally spool wi 60# Power Pro with 40# Ande mono as a leader and reverse it the following year. If you don't know what to do with it send it to me.:D

Use dacron for backing and about 50 yds of it or you will be putting massive amounts of PP on your reel and will be spending many mega bucks. You don't need but about 150 or 200 yds of PP on your reel. Just remember there will be a lot of waste at the end unless you turn the line around.

If you've decided not to go with the PP, then you can use pp that heavy as main for big bottom fishing or you could still use it for backing on a 4/0+ reel that could take the strain. PP is good for heavy bottom fishing because the diameter is smaller so the current won't force you to use really heavy weights. The greater strength is also better for locking down drag because you won't snap off as easy as mono and it doesn't stretch nearly as much when you have 100+ feet out, so it lasts longer. The strength allows you to really hammer those AJs and groupahs that wanna dig to china when you hook em
