What is the best way to get your gear back if you get snagged on a piling...and I mean really stuck (break your rod, lose your rig). I remember something about cutting the line and tying some lead to the end then retie back to your terminal end. The weight of the lead should unsnag you and then you can pull your rig up? Is this correct? THanks.

Seems to be in Theory only... Saw a guy try for quite a while with no luck.

If you are truly wrapped around the piling, you ain't gettin' it back. If it is a straight down thing you can try attaching a heavy weight to your line with a snap swivel and a heavy linetied to teh weight. Let teh weight slide donw th eline so the force of it can dislodge the hooks. If it doesn't, pull the weight back up and try again.

Don't get to fish a lot so I'd go with BR on this one. Cut the line, tie another on, and get back to fishing. ;)

Scale the side of the pier "spider man style" and retrieve it.

Just get someone to lower you down in a pier net, undo the rig and then get them to pull you back up. :p Ive done it a million times.

1-Cut your line
2-Put another rig on
3-Cast out
4-REPEAT steps 1 through 3

:D :D :D :D

First, I like to put my hands together and say a little prayer. Then I start yanking the rod this way and that w/ a crazed look on my face just to see how scared I can get the people around me. Seriously though, I guess it would depend on the situation. Ifin ya got another of the same lure and the fishin is hot, just cut it and fish on, however the weight thing seems like a good idea to me if the line ain't tangled around the pole.

if you are after plugs like gotcha's with lots of extra hooks then just lower a weighted towel on a sturdy rope get the hooks tangled in the towel and pull hard. you might break or bend some of the hooks but they can be fixed with some single strand wire. Don't do this when there are too many people around though you will just be in the way. Come back after most are done fishing then you can "clean up the pier" of all those unsightly lures. It can really help with gotchas costing 3 bucks each. If nothing else it is a good way to pass the slow times.

if you are using a fishfinder rig sometimes you can pop the line or let it go slack then jerk it and the weight may knock it free.

use 2000000 lb Powerpro and a 56/0 reel. That way theres no croaker, spot, mack, red, black, sheepy, spade, flouder, bream, snook, or cobia that can snag you. And if they do, you can just rip the piling from underneath the pier and untangle the line at your leisure

I also suggest the spiderman thing. And if the rig is way down, get some scuba gear. If a shark is still on the line, box him bareknuckle, get him in a headlock, and remove the hook and one tooth as evidence of your bravery

Sounds like alot of trouble for at most a 3.00 gotcha LOL

But you can do like I do You do a three and a half gainner with a twist into the water then untie your line....tangle your buddies because you know he was laughing at you and swim back to shore. Remember always think safety first...check the water depth would hate to see any of you get hurt out there.

first...if you know you are stuck...go slack...there may be a fish that will help...otherwise...re-tie and start over...

Don't be so shocked. I've seen people do it. Only it wasn't to gain back tackle, but rather 40+ lb. kings. Isn't that right b3butner and macadoo? :D

I saw a guy climb under cherry grove pier one time to get his rig back...He knew what he was doing though b/c he helped build it...It was pretty funny though.

same guy f4k104 is talking about has a rig retriever that is kinda like a cross between an anchor sinker and a pier gaff, uses it to rip all the tangled rigs loose from the pylons.

also used it to retrieve f4k's cast net after he forgot to loop it around his wrist in the middle of a pogie run.:D :D

LOL thats a ghetto lure retriever....just goto a local baitshop and ask if they have a lure retriever

theres one so you get the idea of what they look like...you can get different kinds but ive used them and they are great
