what is a good reel for this rod? I want it cheap and I want to use 30 lb line. I have been debating because the reels I've considered either seem like they may be too big or too small. Is a senator 3/0 too big?

What will the rod be used for?

3/0 or jigmaster will do the trick. They have the same gears. 3/0 holds more line. What will you use the combo for?

I have a Penn Senator 7' 20-50lb with a Daiwa Sealine SG50H. Going to try it out for Pin rigging.

I have one as one of my kingrods, it currently doesn't have a reel on it, but a Shimano TLD 15, 20, or 25 would all be good reels for that rod. The Penn 3/0 would also be fine. It really does depend on what you plan on using it for.

I will use it mostly soaking baits on the bottom with egg sinkers and such. I want it to be a medium duty kind of rod for catching reds, blacks, smaller grouper and cobes with pinfish, sardines, and grunts. I wouldn't be king fishing, it would be more basic stuff.

Id go with an abu 6500 or somethin along those lines. I have two that i use for the same thing you will be and they work great.

abus with 30lb? that would be kinda low on capacity. the stuff I'll be doing is pretty close to the pier, so I need to have a good bit of strength.

My main paranoia is that I wish I could hold each reel in my hand. I don't want to buy a reel as big as my head and not realize it til it's at my doorstep

abu 7000 or jigmaster since you want cheap. Otherwise i'd say a daiwa saltist or shimano torium, avet mx or jx, daiwa sealine 300, any 40 or 50 size daiwa sealine-x style conventional would be perfect. Penn 4/0 is a little overkill.

Avet mxl holds a lot of line and great drag !!

can't do an avet, too much money. Maybe the sealine-h 30. i just want something that wouldn't be a hassle to cast a little bit and could hold a fair amount of 25 or 30lb

would a Daiwa Sealine-x SHA be a little easier to cast than a 3/0? I was htinkin I'd get that because it looks abit more casting-friendly and would be a little smaller than a 3/0
