Ok, Here is a question.

Does anyone use finger mullet rigs when targeting Blues. Since those guys, especially the little snappers, love to hit the tails of bait fish, it seems like they would be very effective.

I used them alot last year with so so success.

Anyone use them in the surf, or is the fish finder the main go to rig for blues.

Thanks,

Jeff

what do you mean by a finger mullet rig?

Blues will hit your bait on any rig that you put out there...I've cought them on the FM, FF, dropper and Bottom rigs (both steel leader and mono). Personally, I don't think it makes a difference..if they're there and hungry, they'll find your bait and take it.

Jeff, if you are talking about th ones with th treble at the bottom,I was fishing next to a guy using those and while he caught more than I he was getting bait eaten with no hookup alot too.

Well I liked the idea of inserting the metal rod in the mouth and out the anus and attaching the split Double (Hiney Hook). The ones I used were on a float. Except they were hard to cast.

But enough people have caught them on other rigs. So i guess a hungry blue will find anything.

I have noticed that on more than a few occasions The blues would bite right in the middle and leave me a head and tail on the rig.

I only though of this since Blues are more of the agressive feeder and like to hit the bait in the rear. Hence the reasons Rock and Drum prefer the heads of fish off the bottom. The blues eat the tails and the heads fall and the Rock clean em up. I am sure I read that somewhere.

I have used the finger mullet rig, with some variations with great success. I almost always change the float to something smaller (1/2 inch by 2 inch torpedo or just a 1/2 inch ball. Some times I replace the wire with a lighter peice of stiff monel leader. I almost always shorten the leader 12 to 15 inches. The idea is to get the bait up off the bottom. Blues like freshwater Bass look up or straight ahead for thier chow not down. Works good at Corson's and Townsends!
Fresh Mullet, cast net over canned dog food around the bridges!

Good Luck,

I've used the mullet rig in the surf and have found that I do get a lot of hits on this rig. I try to push the metal pin as far down as I can towards the tail. The hooks that come with this rig aren't the best but it does the trick at times. A lot of the time the blues will take a quick bite then drop the bait leaving the tail on the hook. Don't expect a lot of distance on this rig.

Those stinger hooks are great when the taylor blues are in thick. Otherwise you get bitten off every time.

I agree,
Chartruese Float w/ bucktail mullet jig seems to do better for me than plain ole blue fish rigs...Its all i use for blues anymore...

we just use a light sinker and a hook with a frozen mullet...cast out and wait for the hit

we usually pick up a couple packs of frozen mullet and catch them one after another even when the bait is still frozen

I use the finger mullet rig with a fish finder and it worked pretty well for me last year...and yes, sometimes they still will bit the middle out of your bait.....but you'll catch your share...good luck !!

I use finger mullet with 18# sevenstrand and tiny trebles on a king rig for big spanish. Blues are a tremendous pain in the butt when king fishing because of the way they feed. They'll chase bait until it gives up most of the time and more often than not, if they don't take the tail, you'll reel up two pieces of bait where a blue bit it in half and let go.

I've actually experimented by putting a red trailer hook, like the type used on spinnerbaits, on my nosehook for mullet. It's actually worked quite well and 2 out of 3 times I hook the blue with the trailer.
