Depends on how far out you want to go. There is a lot of ground to cover out there but it can be productive. I would look to an early morning or better yet an evening trip if you want the best results. Grab your chart and look for the target ship.
You can alos look for the eastern side of buoys 70 and 68. The headboat that leaves out of PLO goes out there for night fishing. There is a lot of structure in the river itslef and I have chummed up large blues and rock but I cannot remember where we were.
If you want I can point you to some PDF charts that are free and may help you

You can rent rooms at Schiebles fishing center or at the restruant/motel in Ridge. Target ship is a long ways out as is the channel, plenty of good fishing closer in: Corn Field Harbor, Rock piles off PLO and the Point itself is a great place to drift fish over. PNP light is where I got em last week.

Lippy is correct !! I was just giving you areas that I have been successful. My first trip out on a boat by myself was PLO and we were skunked at the places lippy mentioned. I am much more knowledgable now ... I did not know what I was doing then and some say I still don't :D. As long as the waves cooperate the point is a great place.
We had often seen the target ship in the distance from the pier so it was in our heads that we had to see it close up. Its pretty cool being out there for the first time seeing it. Also the gas docks. It is a way cool place to see ... kind of like an island in the middle of no where with all sorts of birds its way cool.
Anyway if you are in a smallish boat stay around the PLO area and don't venture out too far unless you know what U R doing.
