Before killing me for posting on two boards, let me say I am pressed for time and figured this board would get more hits than the Boating Board.
My dad has been talking about mounting a rod holder in the middle of the transom of his boat for dropping baits/rigs straight back. I figure this would be a great Father's Day gift, so I need advice. What I need to know is if it should be a 15 degree or 30 degree holder. Or, is there another that I should be looking at? All input is welcome and greatly appreciated.

When flush mounted rod holders are mounted on on the gunwales (sides) of a boat you would mount 15 degree holders on the end of the gunwale and the 30 degree holders a couple of feet up from the 15 degree holder. This way when you are trolling the 30 degree holder is hanging out at more of an angle and will not cross over the 15 degree holder. The thing with 30 degree hloder is that you have to have pretty wide gunwales for the addition angle that the 30 degree holders have. As far as mounting them on the transom you could use either 15 or 30 degree holders just make sure the flush area is wide enough for 30 degree holders. Personally I have four 15 degree holders (two on the sides two on transom) on my boat that work very well. Hope I did not confuse you and hope it helps!

I have the attwood brand on the skiff and they are a great universal rod holder. You can get various different mounting bracket styles and they adjust to any position you want the actual rod holder is removeable with the mount staying in place which is great for when you are not useing them so they dont get in your way, They are avaliable at wally world for 15 bucks a peice and they come with a side mount bracket. The other brackets like flush mount and rail mount are avaliable for 5 bucks each. I had rock fish up to 42 in slam baits all winter and never had one brake, not to mention all the pileing i caught dureing the bay season.
For the money you cant beat them in my opinion.

After reading the post again this is not exactly what you are looking for but look into them anyway if you get a chance since they are removeable, they might also help you get your line a little farther from the prop.
