I'm looking at buying a Shimano baitrunner for pier fishing, i'd like to know which would you recommend and which rod would be a good compliment to the reel. I was thinking a baitrunner would be good to use on the pier, let me know. thanks-

Depends on the pier, current, and what you're after. For lighter duty, I've got two 3500 baitrunners with 20lb powerpro on Tica Dolphin 1/2-3oz 9 footers. Great up to 2oz, and can throw 3 when you have to, but if 3 won't hold then you'll probably want something else for a rod. The 3500 is rated for 305yds of 8lb test (dia of 20lb powerpro), so I'd probably stick with that and maybe get the 2-6oz Tica Dolphin in the 9' size. I've got that rod as well, and have it matched up with a 4500 Daiwa Emcast. Reel seems a little big on that rod, which is why I'm suggesting the 3500 for that rod, but man does it throw with braid on.

For heavy duty, I'll defer to others for recommendations. My heavier stuff is all conventional. One last quick comment on the baitrunners though...tough reels, but if you're thinking the baitrunner feature has a loud clicker...think again. You'd have to be fairly close by or see your rod moving, because it only makes a low volume, higher pitched whine when it's letting out line.

What RiverOtter said. The Tica would fit that reel just right.

thanks. I plan on fishing for red fish and maybe sheepies. I plan to fish either jax pier, jeykel island, or tybee

I bought the baitrunner and spooled it with the 20# power pro line, will i still need a leader or will the line alone be enough to catch those sheepies?

I'd suggest a leader. You won't have to add protection for casting should you decide to cast, and for the sheepies next to the pilings the mono is more abrasion resistant. Others may suggest otherwise, but that's what I'd do. As for strength, the 20lb powerpro is plenty for just about anything you're going to catch anywhere from shore.
