I've been trying to look up a knot that is good for heavy mono when it comes to attaching hooks, swivels, and lures. I'm trying ot find a suitable knot for attaching 100lb mono to a barrel swivel and a hook. Usually I just crimp it, but I was wondering if I could save crimps and make presentation a little more subtle with a knot.

I have been using the thumb knot (http://www.thaifishingguide.com/fishtechequip/techniques/knots/thumb_knot.html) but I would appreciate it if anybody had any other knots. Most of the knots used for smaller mono like clinch knots are too twisty for stiff heavy mono

You may want to try a uni knot

I second that nail knot. The uni is a bit bulkier than the nail knot.

It also appears that the thumb knot in your link is a nail knot that has the loop uncinched.

I don't use my thumb,I use my index finger, and YES,it is a nail knot that is not cinched all the way down.. Much better for heavy line than a uni,for the reason AtlantaKing said,IMHO..

The nail knot is good and so is the Grinner knot.

Thanks, for this tip!!!

I've been looking for a knot to replace crimps, and this looks like a good one. I made the Thai site a "favorite".

Palomar - the simplest knot I've ever tied...Its what I use for 80lb to swivels, don't see why 100lb would be an issue.

I can recommend several knots suitable for heavy (>50 lb) mono.

For all of these it important to realize that what makes heavy line difficult to tie correctly is simply that it's nearly impossible to tighten the same knots that you would use in lighter line. So, most heavy line knots are either varients of knots for rope or are typical mono knots but using fewer wraps or turns so they can be tightened fully. In both cases this means that many of the common heavy mono knots are relatively weak (percentage-wise). However, it's all relative and as long as the heavy mono is being used as leader or shocker material then even a 70% knot to the terminal hook/swivel in 100 lb mono is fine if your main line is anything less than 70 lb., etc.

Here are some good knots use to avoid needing to crimp. For all of these I recommend forming them loosely, lubing them well, then putting the hook around a boat cleat or eye-bolt, then tightning as hard as you physically can using gloves. For tying to swivles it helps to put some kind of metal rod through the other swivel end to form a handle when tightning.

1) Palomar - Only possible if the doubled line can fit through the eye of the hook/swivel. Can be tough to fully tighten in heavy line.

2) Snell your hooks - Very clean and strong connection

3) Centuri knot or 3-turn Uni knot - Very easy, compact, and strong. Use more turns for line lighter than 60 lb.

4) Crawford knot - A figure-8 variant that is very compact once tightned.

5) Perfection loop - A variation on the bowline knot that is great for letting a lure work freely.

Hope these help.

Do not use crimps on mono for surf fishing. You will loose up to 60 % of line strength. During a cast you could loose your terminal rig. You can use single barrel swedges on ss cable if you use a dead eye.
