I went to wally world today in preparation for some serious fishing beggining this saturday and bought a 150 yard spool of 15 lb (4lb labelled diameter) PP. The line was for my Shimano sonora 2500, which says it can hold 200 yds of 6 lb mono. I went home and put the smallest amoung of 6 lb mono backing that I could onto the reel. It didn't even cover the spool completely. So I uni-uni'd the PP and reeled it on and the spool wasn't nearly done when I was finished. I still had much more PP left than the amount of backing i had put on.

So is the diameter given on the box exaggeratedly small? I seriously doubt that the PP people put more on the reel than 150 yds.

There's actually a few different things going on there.

The first is that people should realize that no two different lines are the same diameter. 15 lb. Stren is different from 15lb. Big Game, 15lb. Ande, 15lb. Suffix, etc, etc... So the line capacities that reel manufacturers list are just estimates. That Sonora might hold 200 yards of 6lb. Stren but only 175 of Suffix.

As far as the Power Pro goes, I have noticed that the line diameter seems to be a bit larger than advertised. 15lb. Power Pro (which is supposed to be 4lb. diameter) is closer to 5-6 pound in many mono lines.

And finally, I have also noticed, using a line counter, that Power Pro often has at least 10-20 more yards on the spool than it says it has.
