I went out twice this weekend both times heading to Deal Island. Day 1 we encountered 2 dead batteries so we had to run to the nearest open store to get them. Got them in (3 hours later) and we had 3 hours left so we ended up milling at the mouth of the Manokin ... grand total of 4 fish (caught some spikes though).

Day 2. With new batteries we were good to go right ? Wrong! On our way to deal island with a better wind and calmer seas the starboard engine starts screaming (serpentine belt starts burning) so again we settle for the mouth of the river again. Grand total 3 fish with more spikes and a bluefish that escaped. Since we had one motor we trolled surgical hoses a bit but the crab pots in that area make it a difficult task. So we limped back in. Tried to use the starboard motor to help us dock but the squeeking was too much and we say water coming out from the side of the engine (OH BOY).

The harder I try, the more I push to fish the harder the resistance has been. I am starting to believe that some higher authority, power, does not want me to fish right now. I have planned about 24 trips this year either by boat, pier, surf and I probably have been able to execute only 8 of them. Heck 8 for 24 ... thats Shack like numbers from the charity stripe.

Oh come on, that's way better than Shaq! Boats are more of a hassle than they are worth sometimes but it sounds like you are still enjoying yourself. What did you catch the spikes on? Haven't gotten any myself this year.

We caught the spikes on soft crab. Yes its nice being out on the water but when the spectre of more repairs loaming over your shoulder its hard to relax completely ... especially since we could not get to deep enough water to fish effectively during the midday sun.

I have had many cancellings of pier/surf trips this year ... all during prime time.

A boat is a lot of trouble but I also hate crowded piers. During tourist season its hard to fish the ocean w/o a 4x4 and there are very few public accessible areas to fish down my way ... even though I am surrounded by water access is still restrcited. I guess I need a yak
