I picked up this six foot conventional rod for my 11 yr. old son. He wants to use it off the pier for blues, (kings ??) so he claims. I think my options are either a jig master 500, penn 309 or a pflueger G50. I like the castability of the jigmaster, but I have a feeling I am going to be spending alot of time taking care of bird nest. What advice do you guys have? Should I get him a level wind???
Thanks TM62

WHy those reels? I would think maybe sometime of ABU levelwind would do much better. Espeacially when castibility in an issue for your soon.

What do you suggest from the Abu garcia line for a six foot conventional. I'm just guessing on the penn reels.

How about the ABU 6500?That's a popular choice.

My 11 year old picked up my ABU 6500 (which is on a musky rod) while we were at the jetties fishing for blues; he loves it! I showed him a few basics, and told him he was on his own as far as birds nests; I was amazed at how fast he picked it up and he was casting lures and catching bluefish on it readily; he has a few birdnests, but hey how else you gonna learn? Definately get a 6500 IMHO.
