Day 1 I take a scratched up plastic lens mask I found in the surf,a snorkle someone gave me, cheap fins, and a 3 prong sling pole I borrowed.(in case ya dont know, its a 6' fiberglass rod, hook rubber tubing on thumb, stretch band, grip rod.) And dive in. Scared as heck of the iron on the jetties, hyperventelated a bit.

Day 2, kill black drum. chase big flounder around. Spend bucks on good mask. Gotta try that mother. Blinded by the sun I cant see the steel stickin up. scared swell will impale me. hyperventalated a bit.

Day 3 Observe the master.. Russell. I cant say enough about his expertice. Afer a few big flounder he nailed a big spade and a big shark run him out of the water. He went back 3 hrs. later with yak in tow.

Day 4 Go buy gloves so I can grip the iron. A bad ass knife to cut my self loose from nettin, kill bull sharks, an cut the rubber tubing on the sling to wrap around the nub. What the heck, might as well pick up an emergency whistle too, right?

Day 5 Tell Russell about the big flounder that eludes me. He says "You got to calm down, that fish can feel your heart pounding" and "make like a turtle" AAAAHHHHH To late im addicted.

Day 11 Im in the groove now. It was stong current the whole time. Workin on free diving. going from jetty to jetty blasting across the bottom in 25'of water. Weeee!

Day 12. A mongo Spade we had been after (R. said at least 14lbs.) came in veiw. Stuck him good and pinned his big ass to the bottom. Tried to get him by the eye sockets and he went nuts. Bent the prongs sideways. Gone. I forgot to waste him with the new knife when I had the chance. oh and I may have hyventelated a little.

Day 14 Buy tips you can drive thru an ammo box an never pull out.

Get home, go online, figure what it will reqire to get in a school of stripers and kill the biggest one.

This is gonna get ugly.

Any other speros out there? Good sites? Forums?

Have yak...Will travel

Spear guy here but I'm a beginner myself. Ive seen the guys up here in Central Jersey spearfishing off the Manasquan Jetty and got into it. Its awesome seeing all the little baitfish swimming around you while you hunt for the big ones. I have a Sea Hornet Recruit single band gun but I think a pole spear is more practical around the jetties. Good luck with the striper cause thats what Im ultimately after. They taste almost like lobster. XL

Hey, i know I responded to you on the Militia site yesterday, but I also wanted to mention to you that you could also get a weight belt with a small amount of weight. It would help you get down and stay down a little longer.

I would love to get back into it. Have a JBL MiniMagnum gun that needs new rubber on it, not sure where my 7' and 6' Graphite Hawaiian Sling and my 6' Aluminum Hawaiian Sling are at though. Murky water is quite spooky, as is the night. If things like the Jetty make you nervous....just stay away from them until you are more comfortable with snorkelling. I have tried snorkelling on the East coast before from the surf, and it gets kinda dicey with the undertow and the dirty water.

Check pms Bob. (dont want to p off the locals)

I have gone stalking in the local rivers every day this week. Killed some big cats by pulling myself down under fallen trees. Shot a 25lb. carp yesterday. And have observed some of the the biggest Smallmouth I have ever seen so I can come back and get them on rod and reel. Hunting and fishing combined. The best of both worlds... THEIRS!
ps. The wife has confiscated all credit cards. She knows me to well.

You've got it bad :D

Half dozen years back, went to Marathon for 2 weeks, stayed 8..... certified/got all equipped/logged 38 dives, plus another 25 going out in a skiff, in the afternoons :p

Hard to think about, that I traded all that stuff, for a lawn tractor

Still have the snorkel, and all accessories just in case ;)

Huh ??? Seems that could make good trade material for a new setup
