Read the below story (from Avalon Pier OBX yesterday)
The big excitement was a landing of a red drum by Mike L. of Lynchburg,VA(see below right). Starting with his initial hook-up near the end on the south side, Mike fought this fish back and forth the length of the pier until he wound up near the shoreline. He had a small rod with 16 lb test, and he handled the fish pretty well until the drum decided to go under the pier and to the other side. Now here is a guy facing south while his fish is heading out to sea on the north side. This is where Mike H. from Southern Shores came to the rescue. The drag on the reel was released so the fish is taking most of the line heading out to sea. Mike H threw a gotcha out to grab the line. With enough slack in the line, he cut the line while several people held onto it, hoping the big fish wouldn't make a hard run. Mike L brought his rod to the north side, tied the line back to his rod, and reeled in the slack. But it wasn't over yet. This fish took him back to the end(but on the north side), turned the north corner, turned the south corner, and proceeded to go down the south side AGAIN. That fish did one lap around the pier, and was heading for another! He was finally netted, got his picture taken, and released back in the water. One tired fish and it was touch and go for a bit, but made its way through the water. I doubt that drum has an appetite for sand fleas anymore.
That's why we love to fish
