This afternoon, I was cleaning out the skimmer basket of my backyard pool...when all of a sudden two large frogs jumped out. They swam the length of the pool(about 50 feet or so ) in no time flat. Immediately a thought came to mind...." I wonder if anyone on P & S has ever used frogs for bait in saltwater ???" I'm thinking about trying some around the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel pilings this weekend. I'm guessing, that hooking them through one back leg on a fish finder rig with enough weight to keep them off the surface might get some large sea trout or stripers....or maybe even a cobia.
If anybody has tried using frogs in the salt, let us know how you did and how you rigged everything. I, for one would be very interested on hearing about it. Howie

I've used live and plastic frogs for largemouth bass. Never tried them in salt water.

Considering they breath air, maybe a weight might not be a good idea?

They will drown, catch a baitfish and use that. I imagine fish smells better to fish than frogs do. Match the hatch as they say.

Matbe frog is a bad idea, but has anyone ever used nightcrawlers in the salt as a sub for blood worms?

Just wondering

Tried Louisiana Pinks once...

Saltwater kills them instantly. Didn't get a single bite after fishing it for an hour on a day when the whiting were hitting two at the time.

Have caught croaker and spot off of night crawlers... not in great numbers and had to change bait often.

Any kind of earthworm will work fine when the bite is on. When it is slow go back to the old standbys (ie shrimp and bloodworms). We use to dig our own to save a few bucks. Nothing new there. I never tried catalpa worms in saltwater. That might be a little too different but who knows without trying it out.

A buddy of mine in the Jacksonville area uses live frogs in the salt and says he does pretty good but I have no idea what that means to him. His trick is taking a needle running it through the frog from front to back. He then ties a treble hook on an pulls it against the frog but not into it. He always fishes it from a boat and just lets the frog swim around trying to get to shore. Not sure how long they live like that or were exactly the needle gets inserted or exits the frog, but it might be worth a shot.

Nightcrawlers work just as well as bloodworms, sometimes if not better when the bite is on... but they don't live long at all. They squirm like crazy when they hit that saltwater... and the trout seem to LOVE it. I have caught tons of small trout and spots using whole nightcrawlers on a bottom rig.

And yah know you got a problem when yah look at yer kids beta fish and think to yerself "that'd make great striper bait" They come in assorted colors too!

Watched an old guy on the bay tearin up small spot on nightcrawlers this weekend. He was gettin hit as soon as the bait hit the water.
