Isn't that like drinking cheap wine then bringing out the good stuff when you are already drunk and can't tell the difference?:--|

SHA 20... but maybe 30... do you think 30 is too big for 7' rod?

ya dont need it yak fishing... a 20 with backing will handle anything you would "want" to catch salt

Aggree with UNClub13. Have done this with some of my smaller reels that I use in the surf. Usually about 200yrds of braid on the bottom and then the rest of it with mono. No concern of extra knows going throught the guides and if I see the braid coming up then I know that I have about 200yrds left to fight with.

even without the "backing".....you'd be surprise what that lil reel will catch with just 17lbs mono

no, it's like gaining line capacity and saving money in the long run.

a little confused bout braid. you put the full spool on lets say 300 yards hten just the rest with reguler mono, and this works just as well

The braid is laid on the spool...then topped with mono. The braid is the additional line capacity / security....when you snag that great white or tuna in the suds:D ....the only issue I may have with the braid underlay is the spool balance...will the braid affect the balance of the spool on each cast?

I had a problem with the 525 that I put braid on. Someone said it might be outta balance so I pulled it off and respooled careful to lay it on evenly and haven't had a problem since.
Oh yeah, it was just the bottom shot not the whole spool full of braid.

Dosent the line slip with braid backing. I use dacron for backing.

Braid w/ Top Shot of mono works well. I have an SHV30 w/ 300 yds of 30 braid ( got it on a real deal) and a top shot of almost 200 yds of 17 Suffix Tritanium. Works well. This gives you a big reserve for old "Big Tooth" and also the braid almost never wears out so you only have to fork out for a couple hundred yards of line. It's easy to keep fresh new line on the reel that way. Tie the mess together with an Albright and go fishing.

Wow, I've never heard of anyone doing this. Are you getting 500 yards of line on a reel made for 300? I have a 525mag and I may consider this since I nearly got spooled by something before the line hit a snag and broke.

I don't know the exact yardages, but you could probably get 300 yds of 15# braid ( it's really a lot stronger than 15) and a couple hundred of 17 on as a top shot. That would give you something like 500 total. You know the stuff is like sewing thread, its really thin.

throw the balance of the spool off, which will cause bearings to wear funny and eventualy destroy the reel... Even if ya think ya put if on perfect, ya didn't.. Pressure from the mono topshot when fighting a large fish wll compress it in different spots up and down the spool causing it to be come un-ballanced.. From a surf/pier stand point I would love to see some of the fish you guys are catching that require you to need more than 275 yards of line... JAM :)
