Is it allowed?? I drive 18 for a living, Rand McNally shows camping at Buxton point. How, where do I get a permit, (if required)? May sound kinda kooky, but I'm lookin at the 1st week of Jan. Some striper fishin is in order, and this is the time slot I can use. They may be there, may not, drum may still be around, either way. I like the beach campin thing. I understand window weights are what it takes to hold bottom there. :) :) I don't know a thing about that neck of the woods. I fish Cartaret Co. Morehead, Beaufort, Calo. But really wanted a fair shot at a slot this year. They come to play up your way a lot more than they do down here. Great Isle Concessions closes the ferry down to the north core on Dec 1st. so that shoots that one. I'll just drive around. But would rather camp than throw away the $$$ on a room. Any help with info is appreciated. Thanks. Kevin

If you fish those areas alot I would assume you are coming from the cedar island side. If that was the case you should just stay in Ocrakoke. Teeters I THINK is open year round and I bet you could still get a slot fish there in January....

If your coming from the other way I THINK also Frisco Woods camp ground is open...

Dress warm.. Jan can be bitter on the beach but most of us have been there.

Cape Hatteras isn't that much different than Cape Lookout/south core. You have east facing (more or less) beaches north of the point and south facing beaches south of the point. It's set up pretty similarly.

As far as camping goes, choices are limited that late in the season. The camping icon on your rand mcnally prolly refers to the NPS campground at Cape Point which closes ridiculously early (like mid Sept). The other NPS campgrounds are open a bit later (into October). There are several good private campgrounds all along Hatteras Island, but again, many close around December. You might want to try Cape Woods (Buxton) and I think skiffisher is right that Teeters in O'coke is open maybe year-round. I usually just go with a hotel/motel that time of year as they become pretty inexpensive (<$50 a night). There are several good ones in Buxton. I usually go to Buxton Beach Motel because they allow pets, among other reasons.
