sad but it is so so true.

When I was in high school the teacher would borrow my pocket knife. Now I would be kicked out of school and charges filed against me for carrying a pocket knife to school.

And to think what it will be like in another 20 to 30 years.

To think I was President of the "Bible Club" in Junior High and we had assemblies (public school) where we had "Bible Quizes" against other schools. We said the pledge of allegiance every morning (including "one nation, under God") as well as an opening prayer. If we did something wrong, we were called to the front of the room/gym class and promptly administered the appropriate number of "licks" with the wooden paddle with the holes drilled in it and the signatures of all us kids who were paddled with it before. Parents were called in to the school when we were especially bad, and they actually showed up for a conference with the principal while we offenders sat there and shrank in our chairs...knowing we'd catch it again when we got home. (Note, our parents also felt it was important enough to actually TAKE OFF WORK to come to the school for these meetings). The strongest drugs in the school were given out by the school nurse and went by the street name "ASPIRIN"!!! There was no such thing as a school "psychologist". The closest thing to a psychologist was the football coach, who always told us "No pain, no gain". We respected our teachers (well...we said a lot behind their backs, but never openly confronted and CERTAINLY never challenged them verbally or physically) and knew if we didn't do what they said...we'd "catch it at home" again (see above). If we were absent, a call would be placed to the home wanting to know where we were. Also, we actually had to make good grades in order to pass or else have to repeat the grade until we learned what we were supposed to. Nobody was given a "Free Pass". If you were 20 and still a senior, that meant that your parents wouldn't let you drop out of school. Those who did drop out at 16 MUST have their parents' permission. Classes were given on how to take care of babies for those girls who had baby sitting jobs...because there were no girls who had babies. A nursery at the school was unthinkable and unnecessary. We were also considered to be under the school's "jurisdiction" from the time we left the house until the time we got home, and everything we did wrong during that time would get us in trouble with the principal. NOBODY ever filed suit against the school board, the school or the teachers...not even the kids who's dad was a lawyer. My, my, my...how times have changed!!! Sorry to ramble but that post rings so true. I guess all of us older gents need to sit back and reflect on what could have led us to where we are today.

I agree mostly with what you said. The part about no girls getting pregnant doesn't wash though. I remember one girl getting pregnant and getting kicked out of the local church. Kinda like that movie that was just on tv a couple of weeks back. (Saved) Of course i grew up in a really small town (250 pop) and there were 17 in my graduating class. Everybody knew everybodys business. There were no locked doors and if there were perverts they kept it hidden. I and a lot of other youngsters got turned off on religion because of the way they treated that girl. Her brother went off the deep end and was put in jail later on in life for burning down churches. Well she kept her baby anyhow. Most of the girls got illegal abortions. Thats why I think these so call pro-lifers are nuts. Shame a girl for getting pregnant and then ostrasize her. And then the same people blow up legal abortion clinics. Bunch of hypocrites in my opinion.

Didn't mean to imply that none of the girls got pregnant...I just don't know of any that did. I think it was a just difference in morals versus today. Trust me...I'm sure most of us guys were thinking with the wrong head back then, just like today, but it seems that the GIRLS were different then and had more self respect than they do these days. Had 600 in my graduating class but we all knew what was going on. I can, to this day, still name the two girls out of the 300 or so who were known for their "looseness" at the time, but even today, I still wonder how much of that was true and how much was merely innuendo and wishful thinking.

Ya know some of the most faithful wives are the girls with the reputations. I've heard two explanations. One is that the reputations were false and the other is they didn't have to wonder what guys other that their husbands were like. Either way it doesn't make any difference. A guy gets acolades for his conquests and a girl is looked down upon. Not too much difference from those muslims who blame the girl for getting raped. A lot has changed over the years some for the worst and some for the better. I sure am glad I'm not in the outhouse when the weather is below zero.

My wife is a teacher and some of these law changes are to protect them. In 1953 the kids didnt sell and smoke crack when in 6th grade nor did they pack heat and not hessitate to use it. Police wrote tickets and directed traffic and were your friends and it was a well respected job that a family could live a decent life on.

Now schools must have full time police officers walking the halls. Kids deface the walls and destroy the property. They harrass and assult the teachers and are not there to learn but to socialize and sell drugs. Police are looked at as the enemy and must often work two jobs to make ends meet and everyone complains when we talk about raising taxes in order to pay them (firemen too) more money.

Sorry thing is they are still the first ones to risk thier life to save a stranger and are the first ones those same people that bad talk them turn too when they need help, and they will help, and they are the first to get sued because they didnt save the loved one from the assult/burning car/ or robbery.

Sorry I ramble on......but as I was saying even my wife thinks this no tolerance BS has gone to far. Expelling a kid because he has a gun the size of a quarter as a key chain or a squirt gun or the like on school grounds well is just wrong whatever happened to common sense. Guess it too left witth the 50s

I too feel sorry for my grand children because it will only continue to get worse and no one stops it they talk about it like we did in this post but do little to change it...that is what is the real shame

My 25 year old son said something the other day when some Senator was talking about another law. He said "Why does the Government keep finding new ways to regulate us instead of finding ways to help us?" I'll give u an example. I will preface this by saying that I have never used an illegal drug. I spent my young years in the military. In my older age, I've spent some time in biker hangouts etc.. I've been around a lot of pot smokers. I would rather be around them than a bunch of drunks. If I was a fast food mogul I would be lobbying for the legalization of pot. All they do is laugh a lot and get the munchies. It's kind of funny that so much disinformation is put out by our government. I have yet to see a pot addict, or somebody on pot going crazy and killing his girlfriend but I've seen a lot of alcoholics. I've killed myself with alcohol and cigarettes which both should be banned by the government but the greedy sobs want to tax them and spend tax dollars telling you not to use them. Really stupid. The biggest problem with our young and drugs today are with prescription drugs. The doctors are the pushers when they prescribe that stuff for a hangnail. I need to get off my soapbox.

Your son is part right Why does the Government keep finding new ways to regulate us instead of finding ways to help us?"

The government regulates us because they think they are helping us. Why do people keep thinking the governemnt should help them. They need to get off thier lazy ass and help themselves. Quit waiting or asking the government to help you out. Help yourself. Greybeard this is not directed at you but at all those bums that will not get a job themselves. The ones always wanting a hand out.

What I meant about help and what he meant was like lower taxes. He works hard for his money. The federal government lately has been trying to find more ways to get into people's personal lives. That Patriot act is a good example. If they used it for just catching terrorists it would be one thing but they use it and that grand jury that is secret to spy on everybody. Why don't they pass a law making spybots illegal? Because they use spybots. We have to spend our money keeping the stuff out of the computer. I'm not doing anything illegal but I don't want the government listening in on my private conversations like they do on every cell phone call made in this country. I am retired military and spent 3 years in country Vietnam and 3 cruises offshore. I feel that I have the right to critisize the Government when I think they are wrong. You know that we spend 5 thousand dollars per capita in Israel annually. We sprinkle around foreign aid like water and get mostly hatred from those countries that we are giving aid to. I didn't used to believe in isolationism but lately I am starting to change my mind. I remember watching the news when we went into Afghanistan. Israel decided to build more settlements while we were preoccupied. That really stuck a stick in that Arab hornets nest. I like and respect the Jewish people but sooner or later they are going to have to deal with the Arab problem. We have terrorists attacking this country because of our support of Israel. Like you said. Our people shouldn't look to the government for help. Well neither should these foreign countries.

There is just too many damn regultions and regulations that overlook the regualtions. People are dependant and become lazy because thegovernmentallows it. Basically they give away free money which allows individuals to become lazy therefor promotes it. You see here in the US it's "your innocent until proven guilty" in my homeland it's the reverse "your guilty until proven innocent". It's seems that everyone has become afraid to push the button to say let's put a stop to all this. There is just too many damn laws that I totally disagree with. Actually it's just that there are too many damn greedy people out there that only care for thier own that creates these problems.
