I have tried using a shock leader on my surf spinning rod and cut it off after just a few casts on account of that the knot would slam up against the rod guides as I cast and i am scared that it will bust them off i want to put about
4'-6' of mono shock leader tied to the main line and then 3' of steel leader on the end. does anyone have any advice or know any different types of knots that could help me with my problem if so pelase let me know. i use both mono and braid as main lines.
thanks guys Tight lines and God bless. <>< <><

I hope you are not winding the steel leader inside the guides :) ! The smallest knot that I use, is the improved albright knot. I fyou feel it going throught the guides something else is wrong. Either your guides are too small or something else is happening. Another option for small knots is to use braid as a shocker. It is small for its diameter.

I thought using braid as a shocker was a no-no due to it's non existent stretch. That's why most of us who use braid don't tie our terminal tackle directly onto it and use a mono or fluoro shocker.
GODAMIGHTY! here we go again.
For mono to mono connections use an albright
For mono to braid use a uni to uni.
Please don't start the braid VS. mono thing again.
4'-6' of mono is not really doing anything as far as "shock" is concerned, Shock leader is meant for casting and needs to be the length of the rod plus drop length plus 4-5 wraps around the spool. I.E a 12' rod will carry a 28'shock leader.
If you want to add a steel bite leader to the shock leader, Tie a swivel of appropriate strength to the mono and connect the steel using a crimp sleeve. a 100lb test swivel should be a good start. try to match it to the mono shock leader strength.

just a thought...
would mono shock leader work for my surf set up and then tie my surf rig to it with floro to help save some $$$

I use 60lb Sakuma mono for shock leader, and I build my rigs out of flourocarbon.

Only one way to do it!!! Use a Uni to Uni and be done with it! Gives ya 98% knot strength and it's the best!!! Try it...you'll like it!!!

Sorry guys "Shock leader" would not be the correct name for what i was referring to i guess you could call it a grip leader or guard leader just something to grab other than the braid without getting too close and to keep the occasional shark from fraying the line if it rolls.

Has anyone ever used weed eater chord for leader material? it has about .065" diameter  this is super thick stuff it seams like it would work but it makes pretty big knots.

Most of the time I use a Nail to Nail when tying a braided main line to a mono shocker and/or bite leader. It's purdy similar to the Uni to Uni, but with the tag end going under the wraps. I feel better with the line being a little more protected by the wraps. Both are good knots in this situation, IMHO. Eight turns with the braid, three to five with the mono.
Lots of guys loving the Alberto knot for a shock leader when going from braid to mono. I never could get that knot to cinch correctly. Might be a good 'en if I could learn to tie it right.

Yes I have, and it works well. It is stiff and tough and makes pretty good leaders. It also comes in various sizes.

I was simply letting seachaser know that using a BRAID Shock leader was a bad idea. I was picturing him having a spool full of mono and trying to use braid as a shock leader. Try not to jump on peoples back when their just trying to help others.
I agree with all the knots you mentioned, as well as the fact that 4-6' of leader is not enough unless you have a 1 foot rod :) Nice shark rig BTW.
Sorry if my sarcasm got lost in translation, wasn't trying to be an azzhizziehole :D
