I'm going to get a surf setup to be used strictly for pompano.
I need something that will throw 2-3 oz and hold a baitcaster loaded with 10-12 lb test. The bait will be pieces of fresh shrimp or mole crabs. Here is what I'm looking at....
tica ueha427402s with abu garcia 5500c3
Am I on the right track? Is 10-12 lb test (mono) ideal for this type of fishing? The bigger pomps I caught last season were all on 12 lb test:cool:

not real sure about that model of rod but a 5500c3 is just right ..... and 10-12 lb :D
Looked that rod up and it's a spinning rod :p
2nd edit ....UE-HA 630502C 10' 12-30LB 2-8OZ would be a good match for the abu if you want Tica

Thanks, I would have caught that:rolleyes: Has anyone used the UE-HA 630502C? Will it work with the 5500 and 2 oz on 12 lb test?

Not sure about the current in ur area and if you even really need 2-3 oz of weight. I got very good tip from old salts this past summer for catching pomps while I was in Naples FL and it paid off big time. This will keep ur hands clean and save u money and I am almost certain this will work for ya. Get a light inshore rig. Doesn't matter what brand just comfortable and saltwater friendly reel. Use a pink banana jig!! bounce it off the bottom and you will have ur pomps. Good luck!! Good eats!! :D

Yeah, I have light gear to throw at em too. My 7' spinning setup is nice, and I have caught nice pomps with it, but we need distance here.

I'm not familiar with those. What are they and how do i use them?
You toss it out and let it settle on the bottom then twitch your rod up then reel in the slack line and repeat. I used it on Naples Pier and did some wading out with it. Most were using em for pomps but, you will also get Spanish, Jacks, Blues, Ladyfish, and god knows what else. Just make sure the bottom is all sand so you can avoid snags. Hope this helps. :D http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h156/rhorm/pinkjig.jpg
Problem is though it only weighs 1/4 oz so not real good distance but, i'm sure u can get em in diff sizes and get a long rod for distance. I'm sure some of these guys can assist with distance. Not my cup of tea.:D Good luck:D
I'll take mine out today and get a report.

I would get the Daiwa Emcast EC 1002MHFB. I had a 9' tica 2-6 oz and I ended up breaking it lifting a red out of the water(dumb me). I liked it, but I like the Daiwa a Whole lot better.

I don't know about your price range but there are things you need to know to target pomps successfully. First, They are a hard fighting fish witha soft mouth,so you need a rod with some give. The tica is too stiff, you will lose them in the wash unless you have your 5500 set at 50% drag. The best rods as far as Florida Pompano fishermen go are "old school fiberglass rods that have a Med. to slow action (not sure of brands) A lot of guys here in NE FL. use the connoflex gambit and Gambit 24 2-4 oz rods. Mudhole tackle sells a blank by Gatorglass called the "pomp" 11' 2-4oz. Dont let tha 39$ price tag fool ya. One of the best commercial pomp guys in FL.uses this rod (4 actually) The other guy uses connoflex's. the gambits will run you about $250 built. for $119 you can get a really great rod,the Diawa Emblem series 12' heavy 5-8oz. DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THIS BOGUS RATING. This is a 2-4 oz rod MAX. but superb for the money.
I personally use 1 Gambit 24, a Zipplex V-Max f2 and will be purchasing an Emblem this week.

I was looking at that Emblem but didn't realize that the rating was incorrect. I think I'll go ahead and pull the trigger on that one. ?aboutgatorglass "pomp"- is that rod 1 or 2 pieces? I think I'll go ahead and purchase that one as well to have a project this winter... I've seen that Gambit in action and I will have one soon. Great advice, I'll down a goose and juice for u my man

surfside, the gator is a 1 piece blank, I am going to get one here before the spring run, I would if I were you.
Vic. set it up W/ fuji concept LNSG SiC long cast guides or fuji BLNAG alconites. Fuji DPSH reel seat, Black X flocked shrink tube grip or cork tape and a butt cap. I am not sure of the guide layout, gotta have the balnk to decide that.

I still have "others" build my rods, I am not that good yet with the wraps. I just did a little end wrap on the shrink tube on my Zippy, It is "acceptable" but I would not trust me with a full build. Especially if there is alkeehol involved :D

Sometimes they are right in the wash and you can even get by with 1 ouce and a lob. Other times they are further out and you need 2 - 3 once for distance and current.
Then there are the extremes where they are on the outer bar or dropping the bait. A good friend and excellent fisherman, swears that this is the time to use 4 ounce. He says the weight forces them to take the bait with some authority and helps with the hook set.
