J/K. I took apart one of my 525s for it's annual overhaul/lube job. The 525 is built like a tank, and when opened up, it's simplicity is refreshing. Nothing pops out or falls apart when the sideplate is taken off; I was able to remove piece by piece everything inside.

A couple of questions, though. Is the IAR bearing supposed to be greased, oiled or left dry? Also, in the frame, on the right side is a bearing that the pinion gear rides on: is this bearing removable?

I would think you'd grease it just make sure there is not alot of leftover.

I believe the bearing the pinion rides on in the frame is not removable. I bought a new frame for one of mine and it came already pressed in it.

If you have problems putting the right side shaft adjuster knob on, take a small oval file and slightly bevel the sharp inside edge so it will help over the "O" ring. This allows the edge to slide over the "O" ring

AK man you have gutts. I am someone that has not taken many reels apart ( I need to start though) but the thought of taking my 525 apart scares the bejeezuz out of me.

Catfish713, that's kinda what I thought, but I couldn't remember for sure. Lightly greased it is.

WILSON, I just wanted to know if this is something I need to keep on hand as replacement parts. I'm going to order a few eccentric springs and clutch springs to keep on hand, because if either of these two (actually three, there are two identical clutch springs on the pinion yoke) break, the reel is down.

nomadfl, the spool tension control caps on my 525 Mags are all ok, but I'll remember the tip.

cygnus-x1, it's actually not that hard; nothing pops out or explodes. Just keep a copy of the schematic on hand and go slowly, studying the schematic and matching the parts.

After looking at the parts, there are a couple of things that I think would make the 525 Mag an even better reel. The first is a back-up anti-reverse dog and gear underneath the main gear. The reason for this is that if the IAR bearing were to seize up or fail for whatever reason, there's still a mechanical back up. The other thing is a making the left side plate quick release, or making the screws thumbscrews like an Abu. Right now, it's a pain in the butt to remove the side plate to oil the spool bearings. Oh, yeah, also, how about some gold side plate trim rings for the bling? :D

You know more of th inner workings from your jargon but I only saw three bearings, I followed Blackbeards video and had four bearings, was a adventure taking it apart and running back to the video to put it back together LOL

Cdog, the three bearing out front going left to right are (1) right side shaft bearing, (2) spool bearing, (3) spool bearing. That makes 3. There's a bearing (4) attached to the bottom end of the gear stud (look near the handle knob) that the gear stud spins on, along with the (5)roller bearing (Instant Anti-Reverse bearing; just to the left of the main gear). The last bearing is a permanent mount bearing (6) that supports the pinion gear in the frame (can't see it from this picture). That's 6. It turns out there's no bearing in the left side plate like I originally thought; just a speed bushing similar to the left side speed bushing in Abu Ultra-cast reels.

TreednNC, I'll be doing that tonight...not too hard ;)

You do have a point. Ive done it once and got lucky. If I can do it, it cant be too hard. Had an abu stump me for a night or two one time though.

Hey CT,

That kinda looks like the same picture of my 525. I took it apart, cleaned it and haven't put it together yet. What are you doing later tonight? Wanna get together and put both together?

Jsut think...f you have some parts leftover whenyou put it back tgether, you can take credit for designing a new version!

In what state of disassembly is your's in? This evening works for me. Check your PMs

i just did the same thing to mine. and i believe that 4th bearing will come off the shaft. also i never let a dissassembled reel sit over night or i forget everything:beer: i have my avet (in pieces) in a ziplock bag for just that reason.
