I am going to spool my new spinning rod with 20# PP. Should the backing be same pound test or same diameter? What is you opinion?
Thanks.

Well jetty, it all depends on the spool capacity. 300 yards is plenty for our Eastern seaboard fishing. I really don't want or need 500+ yards (or $50+ worth) of braid on my reel.

I put just the mono backing on all my reels to give me a flush fill with a 300 yard spool of braid.

The only surefire way of doing that is a pain. You need to crank on the braid then the mono right to the lip of the spool (yeah, it's going on backwards). Pull the mono off onto a spare reel or spool (I save my empty spools wingnut 'em tight on a threaded rod and use a cordless drill). Now you just spool them on in the right order. That way you won't waste an inch of the braid.

I use mono close to the same diameter as the braid (8 or 10lb test is OK) because if it's much heavier the gaps between the strands are bigger, the braid will eventually nestle in no matter how tight you think you have it and it will become sloppy or loose deep in the spool . . . Not good . . .

yea Jettypark I know we talked about this and i am putting tape on my spool and adding
450+ yds of 30# Spiderwire to my reel (should fill my reel) and since i found a cheeper place to buy spiderwire 450yds (3 spools of 150yds) is only going to cost me about $35 instead of $50 but that leaves me without that extra 50yds Oh well if it fills my spool then that's all i can hold anyway heck i might put 25-50 yds of 30# mono on top to give a little extra stretch i'll let you know how it goes but i probly won't get to try it till this summer since my schools baseball season just started. just one more thing to look foreward to.

Tight lines and God bless Bro. <>< <>< :fishing:
