Been thinking about modifying my Penn SS series reels by removing the bail.

Anyone have any know how ideas on how to go about this?

I have 7500 and 8500 series reels.

Thanks,

If you remove the bail what guides the line back on the spool while reeling?

The bail just "guides" the line to the roller after the cast. When you're reeling the line in, the line is on the roller & the bail doesn't do anything. If the bail is cut off, then you have to manually put the line on the roller before reeling in. Take a look @ a Van stall, they don't even come w/ a bail.

I used a hacksaw on mine, then a file to smooth it out.

I'd love to hear the point of doing this to a perfectly good reel...What is the possible benefit???

Bail closes on the cast... happens to most penn ss series.

Well, I have two 6500's and two 5500's whose bails have never "closed on the cast". They have had the hell fished out of them too...

I was just curious.

Don't the factory "bail-less" spinners have a fixed-in-place roller??? Seems the "cocking mechanism" would invite trouble when fighting a fish...Might try to open?

Tell me more...

We've seen videos of you casting. You don't generate enuff steam to cause the bail to close.

Watch it, there Santa Claus...:p

Buf96: Penn still makes a 706Z reel that comes with a roller and no bail. It is built specifically for what you want to do with your SS reels. You can find these new, for around $100.00. John

that was great...
mine did that and I just cleaned the "open bail slot" and it fixed the prob... I guess we just need to keep our bails clean...
